Just got this from d42jeep (thanks don!) . Just wondering if these came with a universal and a ratchet? Looks like missing 9/16, 1/2 and 3/4 sockets. Anyone have any info on these? I thought I might try to complete the set if I can figure out what it came with.

I took a few pictures of the set recently. They are particularly attractive tools.

I have done a bit of an ebay survey. Seems like they were sold in 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drive. I am guessing they were sold through firestone tire dealers. I had it at the shop and it generated quite a bit of interest from the techs and the customers.

If I recall correctly, I have plenty of spare parts in Firestone, along with a bunch of sets. I seem to recall purchasing a catalog with the tools in it as well......I'll have to check all that later today.

The pebble finish on the flex handle indicates that they were manufactured by Plomb/Proto.

That would be awesome!

Here's my Firestone sets. I'm not sure the 3/8" drive universal is Firestone, I'd have to dig it out and check. I'm missing a few 3/8" sockets.

Here's pictures of the sets in the 1948 Firestone catalog. It does look like universals were available in the 3/8" and 1/2" sets.

No universal in the 1/2 drive set that looks like this one. Appears to have a ratchet and a crossbar for breaker bar

The top picture (far right) shows a universal in the 1/2" set, and the bottom picture (center) shows a universal in the 3/8" set.

Very nice! I've never seen Firestone sets in their boxes.

I've got a partial 1/2" drive set in nice shape if anyone is interested in a trade:
7/16 thru 1"(?) sockets, breaker bar and speeder.

I will look and see which sockets I am missing. I believe this is the set on bottom right.

If Plomb was able to make this socket right after the metal restrictions were lifted, I don’t think it would have been much of a stretch for them to make the Firestone sockets.

Here is the 1" firestone socket with my 1950ish challenger 1" socket. They are virtually identical in dimension and construction.

The set didn't have the Firestone ratchet but there was a Plomb 5249 instead.

It doesn't match the one in the set in the catalog posted up thread and the Firestone stamp is a smaller font so I thought it must come from a later or earlier set.

Anyone have a ratchet for this set they'd be willing to part with?

I have knurled and pebble beakers in 3/8 and 1/4, and one really short one in 1/2. Also some deep 1/2 drive sockets that look herbrand. I suspect firestone had a number of suppliers over the years.

I am pretty sure I have a couple. Let me check. PM inbound.

I found a short (6" OAL) 3/8-inch drive Firestone extension at the flea this morning. I couldn't remember if I needed one or not, so I was excited to flip open the lid and see I only had the longer one in the set!

It's home where it belongs now! :pimpflash

Thanks, Don. I grabbed it at the Quakertown flea when I made that river-crossing raid into LS territory a few years ago.

Like most guys, I suppose, there are brands and partial sets I keep a pretty good accounting of and others I just wing it when I find something, figuring that if I don't need it, it's uncommon enough that someone probably will. I got lucky.
