Firewood - Qty & Pricing

Last year I was fortunate that I had friend move out of state and he had two truck loads that he gave me for free. Yeah, I used all that last year and now I have to buy more for the upcoming winter.

I know this is somewhat depending on where you live, but I have a few questions to what you guys think. Most sellers in my area (Eastern, NC) sell by the pickup load, which they consider a 1/2 cord. The price from what I have found is typically $70-$100, plus delivery. All of this is seasoned Oak BTW since people can hardly give away Pine.

After a lot of search on CL (did I mention I still hate CL?) I found this ad:

1/2 cord $100

6x10 trailer load full $200

I'm thinking since most size a 1/2 cord by the pickup load, a full load on a 6x12 trailer for $200 delivered sounds like a pretty decent deal.

What do you guys think?

a bargain compared to Northern VA, and if they will stack it for you a real deal. About what we pay here in Middle TN, not stacked either

A full cord is a pile 4 feet high, 8 feet long of pieces 4 feet in length. Around here firewood is usually sold by the face cord, which is still 4 by 8, but is pieces 16 inches or so long (cut to burning length). It goes for about $75 per face cord and with a few face cords, they will usually deliver it and dump it, not stack it.
My son's neighbor is in the tree removal business, so when he has a lot to get rid of he dumps a pile in my driveway. It is usually 4 feet long, so I cut and split it and let it season for a year.

$90 dumped in my driveway as close as I can get the guy's truck. Last year my wife's friend helped stack it (that was fun). Otherwise, that's "man's work" (see thread about women cooking)

Up here a cord runs $250-$350 dumped.

There is no way unless its stacked tight in the bed or the truck has side boards on the bed that they are getting a half cord in a pickup. With that said a $100 for a pickup load isnt bad but will only stack out to be about a heavy 1/4 cord.

A full cord of split firewood cut to 16" should give you 3 stacks 4 feet high by 8 feet long.

3 Stacks of 16" will give you a cord a single stack of 4' X8' X 16" is what we call a rick and 3 ricks make a cord and weigh's about 3000lbs. Around here it's around $225 to $250a cord.

Cord of red oak at 20% MC is still north of 3,000 pounds. No one makes a 6x12 trailer that can haul 3,000 pounds!

6x12 dump trailer here is about $175

Everybody here had tons of trees blown down in June and there are stacks in every back yard. I figure the price will go up after this winter.

Last year was around $200~250 a cord for mesquite delivered and stacked. Split one with daughters family, still have plenty left. Last winter weren't that cold.

This is 2 ricks, about 2/3 of a cord, on my 6x12 trailer. I get it for $50 per rick so this is $100.00 worth. I hauled 6 ricks today to finish out my 12 rick stock pile for the winter. Pretty much all red and white oak. It was cut and split last year so it's well seasoned but still quite dense. Should make for some good burning. We have gas fired central HVAC but we much prefer to use our Country Flame fireplace/furnace that has a seperate duct system running throughout the house like the regular HVAC. I just build a fire and set the thermostat. The blowers come and go like the regular HVAC does. I pretty much keep the fire going constantly from around the first of November to the first part of March. We'll burn 8-10 ricks depending on how cold it is. It's quite a bit of work but we love the wood heat and it is certainly a savings over running the gas HVAC unit all the time.

Is that really a good deal at $185/cord?

I heat with natural gas. I get about the same BTUs from gas for $145 as that $185 cord of oak.
I have to add another 30 cents a day for the gas connection, but I never have to carry wood, haul out ashes, or tend the fire.

I just got a cord delivered for $165. It ended up being a little over a cord. Mostly ash, (thanks to the Emerald Ash Borer) had some oak and some hedge apple also. Dumped at the end of my driveway. I'm near Cincinnati/Dayton.
