So I have grown up working out of my dads snap on box and now that its time to move out I am looking for my own. I would really like to have a SO box but way out of my price range even used. I am looking at mainly the craftsman and kobalt prices, now they look very simular but I have seen to notice in the my trips to both store the kobalt seems to be of better quality. Just trying to get some real world opinions on both boxs.

In both product lines... you have to put some money down to get a decent quality box. If it was me, I'd go with Craftsman. Even tho they're both likely imported products... at least Craftsman seems to have more selection in case you want to add to your setup later.

If you're going to lay your tools out nicely and neatly in the box... you might be okay with the cheaper slide drawers...just grease the slides a little. Otherwise if you're going to cram as many tools as you can into the thing... ball bearings. They make a huge difference when you load a drawer and try to open it.

If your willing to use Harbor Freight... they have some high quality boxes at a fraction of what the others charge.

You are just moving out, what sort of money and space issues do you have?

When I moved out it was a good 6 to 8 years before I had both money and space for a real toolbox. If you are moving far, I would keep using dad's tools, good excuse to spend some family time.

If you have the money and space, do you also need some tools? Then I would look for a nice used box with all the tools you need.

Before I found this site I was a bit naive about tool boxes. I have two craftsman ball bearing boxes now.One is a pos the other is ok. If I would have known better, I would have gotten something different/ better. Harbor frieght is hard to beat in respect to quality and price. They all are coming from China so why pay more for crapsman or kobalt? Friction slides blow if you load them up my Kennedy is way over loaded and is extremely hard to open with a lot of weight.

Honestly, I would take HF over either of those. Cman is overpriced for what it is, and kobalt has a really bad layout IMHO. That and they waist space with speakers....

Do you have a Menards where you live? because their MasterForce boxes are amazing for what you pay.

yea... if you are planning on moving around abit over the next few years, i think a smaller rally style chest would be a good start, overload it to the brim and then once you settle down invest in a good box.

there are alot of other choices past cman/kobalt/hf too, especially in a modest/medium price range. alot of the similarly priced boxes are really the same except for the label.

Got the start of my tools for xmas from the old lady, decent 300 piece craftsman set. I figured it was a good place to start as it has most of the major stuff covered. We have an offer in on a house now with a decent sized 2 car garage, so space is not really a limiting factor. I have looked into the 5 drawer HF tool cart and it does look promising. As of right now 200 is more or less my limit as this will probably be a xmas present from my parents.

as a harbor freight box owner for over a year (fully loaded) i would look skip the craftsman or the kobalt. if you have a menards i would look there as the boxes are the same as the hf and they are cheaper. the 56" is only $650. Its $1000 at hf. I have the 40" that i bought for less than 300. That box is 400-450 now at hf. menards also has a lifetime warranty. you wont have to deal with the run around clamp down at hf

I have a craftsman box and would trade it in a minute for some other brands. My next one will be a montezuma

Craftsman boxes are built in the USA by Waterloo, I called Sears and asked, they list the COO for pretty much everything.

Something to consider if that is important to you.

I would seriously search Craigslist, there are some good tool boxes on there.

Listen to this guy he knows what he is talking about

I bought my first house @ 26 but before that lived in apartments with no garages, and one townhome with a single garage. If I had bought a toolbox when I moved out I would've had to sell it.

Even with my two-car garage I really don't have a need for my HF toolbox. Too wide. 26"-30" is the sweet spot, go up not out unless you are a mechanic. Toolboxes are like man jewelry, "bigger is better"...not always the case.

I guess it also depends on how you organize your stuff, if you want to hide EVERYTHING including equipment like drills you will need a big toolbox.

I just looked at Home Depot (Husky), Lowes (Kobalt), Sears (Craftsman, all of them) and Harbor Freight. By far, the HF box was sturdier and bigger for the $350 (With coupon) and has add on boxes and cabinets.

I had a preconceived dislike for HF, but the quality sold me. Go look at, and try all of them in one day and you'll be convinced. If the budget won't allow the 13 drawer box, at least get the Service Cart ($199.99). You will want one of them eventually any way. I can't wait to get one to go with the 13 drawer.

Here's the thread on the HF boxes. Look at the last page for a good photo of the service cart:

I've had really good luck with the Craftsman quiet-glide ball bearing mid box I have on my toolcart. Has the lift handle drawer lock. I'd recommend it.

I would keep looking on Craigslist or Ebay. Maybe hit some estate auctions. I picked up this Snap-on top that I have junk heaped on top of for $50 this summer at an estate auction.

What about a 56 inch box from Menards? Mastercraft. I own it and love it.

True for really old stock but that hasnt been true in a long long time. Who ever you talked to didnt know what they were talking about, not really a surprise. ALL of the cheaper Craftsman boxes are made in China.

I have a Craftsman ball bearing 10 drawer [top/bottom] that i use for random stuff at home. I simply use it to store tools, i dont work out of it daily or anything, its still like new. It hasnt melted, crumpled, or exploded. Infact i wish i bought 2. Ran me $200 [pretty sure it was an error] at the beginning of last year. Hard to beat for the cash for a box that NEVER moves and gets opened only once in awhile. Infact the only real weakness i can see is the casters [held on with sheet metal screws] and frame under constant movement due to it being so thin. Since the box is stationary though that wasnt an issue with me. Quality wise, if you wanted a box that you could actually push around loaded up, the HF one is the best if you can swing the ~$400.

never understood the appeal of the intermediate addon [$80-$100] when you can get a plain jane 4 drawer friction slide cabinet any day of the week from Sears for $100 or an entire second tool chest like the above for $160. For the $ to space ratio the intermediate and other addon boxes for the cheapo combo sets **** terribly. Plus it makes the setup too tall in my opinion.

Do you have proof? I called Sears and they looked up on their computer. Other waterloo boxes are at least assembled in the USA, ref. the HD "Husky" 53" unit.

Also to the OP, seriously consider a 16" depth or greater, any drawer with 12" depth is VERY shallow and almost unusable IMO. Craftsman sells 12" and 16" units.

That's true, a second box will get you more space per dollar, but when you're limited on floor space, going taller can sometimes be a better option.

I have always had Craftsman boxes but I'm no against other brand. I've been interested in the Kobalt boxes at Lowes but reading reviews I guess the rivets loosen up and the ball bears fall out of the slides.

I'm of the opinion that a used quality box could be a better investment. Now if we could get you to put your location in your profile then maybe we could help you find something local.

The shipping box says "product of China" on it.

Well then their computer is completely wrong. Craftsman boxes have been coming from China for a long time. I dont even think Waterloo makes a domestic box anymore. I believe their high end stuff is Canada. I suppose you could call Craftsman boxes assembled in the US since You assemble them ;). They're stamped, formed, painted, and packaged in china.

If all you have right now is the 300 piece tool set, I would say get a cantilever and live out of it until you can afford a real box that you will keep for the rest of your life. I got a 41" box because it seemed big enough at the time, but I was looking at a 52" and would have liked it, but the 41" was cheaper and seemed sizable. WRONG! My 41" box is just a top, but I already know even once I get the bottom box when I have more space, it won't be nearly enough. My room has many tools and truck parts on the ground right now. Believe me when I say that a 2 car garage can work for some, but when sharing it with anyone, it can get tight really quick.

Wow that is good to know! Myself and the Sears associate looked all over the Craftsman tool box shipping boxes and couldn't find any mention of COO.

I can say the 53" Husky/Waterloo box at Home Depot says "Assembled in USA" on the packaging (saw it with my own eyes, bottom right hand side). Now, I wonder what the definition of "assembled" is?...

Not true. Craftsman has boxes made here, and in Canada, Mexico and China...that I know of. As long as you don't buy the lower end "homeowner" boxes you are good. More or less, if it has Griplatch and isn't stainless I'm almost positive it isn't made in China...yet. Prove me wrong.

I would have to agree with whoever said it though. Craigslist for a nice used box. You can get something nice for less than even the HF box, which is not worth it IMO.

I havent seen a mexico box in a while and i thought their higher end stuff was Canada but i could of been mistaken. Anyway point being none of the bargain boxes the OP is looking for will be of domestic origin.

Craigslist.

I thought they were being built in Missouri now, but maybe I'm wrong. It might be Canada now actually, but I know they aren't all made in China. Only the lower end **** that I hope no one here is buying anyways.

I've purchased multiple cman ball bearing griplatch boxes in the last few months and there was no notation of COO anywhere. The only possible hint, which means nothing, was all the "inspected by" names listed were english sounding.

I like the griplatch boxes and think they're great for the $. The only problem is getting one that isn't damaged in shipping- open the box and inspect it in the parking lot when you load it.

I would not buy a box w/o ball bearing drawer slides- I have an older waterloo w/o bearings and when heavily loaded the drawers are very hard to open. The cman bearing boxes are not expensive and you can probably get a nice one on CL for maybe half of new.

As far as Mac, in the 80s at least some of their boxes were made by Waterloo and were identical to the waterloo sold from places like Grainger, less the nameplates, which directly interchanged. I worked with a guy with a Mac, and I had the Waterloo, right next to each other, and they were the same less the nameplates. The new griplatch BB boxes are much nicer than my 80s vintage Waterloo- which was the same as a Mac.

As of about 3 years ago, I know that Waterloo still made or at least assembled quite a few boxes in Missouri. When I was at the University of Missouri, Waterloo donated one of the really big Craftsman Professional boxes to our FSAE team. We drove over to the plant in Sedalia, Missouri to pick it up straight from the factory.

Just to vamp on what a few others have said, and I know this isn't answering the question that you are asking, I wouldn't buy a box at all.

If you are young enough to use your dad's stuff (and are moving out), I'd spend the money on high quality tools and just buy cheap portable boxes to keep them in. It's a serious pain in the *** to move around something that weighs as much as a piano, and if you move into an apartment or the like for a while, you'll just end up selling it.

In a decade or so, you'll end up with killer tools that you didn't throw away and you can worry about storage once it's easier to deal with.
