Appears to have issues with the swivel base?

I didn't even know that there was a swivel base to it? Honestly I didn't know what I was looking at, I just knew I wanted a decent sized vice for the garage. Glad to know I got a great deal! I was at a different tag sale and saw a good sized Craftsman tool box with some bullcrap tools...couple drawers were busted but the girlfriend talked me out of it :) smart girl!

That is an awesome find! York vices are very nice. Are there any markings on it to help identify what model/year it's from? That should clean up very nicely too.

Yeah I have no real tools... I don't have anything more but 2 wire brushes left over from a HF 4pc set I bought... Gonna try those a bit but I'm sure I could use something a little stronger.

Check out the vinegar/salt de-rusting thread. That would be a great candidate for that method. Once it's clean you can paint/grease it.

On the swivel base, Flip that puppy over and see if the center swivel bolt is either missing or sheared. also the two side bolts should have Lever handles on them, not just straight nuts and bolts, but that is a relatively easy fix.

Two threads worth perusing on this is the "vises of GJ" Thread, for examples of different vises and features they have, and the "Everything you wanted you know about Vises" thread (anyone have that one's link handy? that's not quite the proper title, but someone will have it...

Nice vise for $10. You'll find some nice Yorks in the "VISES of GJ" thread.

So I started to pull it apart, got the vice apart and I looked at the base of it - it is a swivel base...but how does it work? It appears to be a lag bolt with a nut on the other end, one is loose and the other one is tight as can be...any suggestions?

Also, I'm not looking to do any type of molasses or any type of rust removing concoction, just going to clean it up a little bit and paint it red with white lettering.

Pics of the details please, I'm not sure but I don't think you have identified the bolts properly. (Lag bolts are giant wood screws with bolt heads...)

90% of the loose rust and paint has came off with a good wire brushing. I plan to give it a once over with the wire brushes then paint her up. Not sure what the easiest way to get the white letters are but I was thinking a paintbrush.

OK those two bolts holding it onto the swivel base are Carriage bolts not lag bolts. likely original.

loosen them up center it well an re-shoot a bottom pic. I suspect you have a center pivot bolt sheared off. I can see it bu if it's not centered...

you will need to get that out and then maybe a stack of fender washers and a suitable bolt can get it so the thing stays centered.

You will what something handier than nuts and wrenches for quick adjustments and you can make a reasonable facsimile of the usual swivel lock levers in the following way:

Swivel nut and handle:

Nut:
For most “Homeowner” exposed screw vices, use a carriage bolt up from the bottom for the “stud” (If needed…).
For the “nut” get an all thread coupler (long nut about 1-1/2” to 2” long) with the same thread. Cross drill it at one end for about a 5/16 or 1/4” clearance hole.

Locking lever:
Get a 5-6” bolt either 5/16 or 1/4” (see above); also get a matching Jam nut. Grind the points off the hex of the bolt (cosmetic cleanup), and string it through the hole drilled in the coupler (see above).

Run the jam nut down and jam it into the bottom of the threads of the bolt. Cut off most of the excess bolt. Peen the remainder of the bolt threads into the nut as flush as you can, and file flat.

The last step is again cosmetic: Grind the points off the now captive Jam nut. You have just made a new locking lever and nut for the swivel base…

Nice find! York vises clean up very well. They are a quality brand from the Czech Republic. The company still exists today and you can buy spare parts from them here. I did a couple myself, they are pretty easy to take apart. Good luck and keep us posted!
