Hi folks,

Tonight I completed my first from-scratch fabrication project. It's definitely small time compared to some of the awesome work I see on this board, but I'm proud of it.

I've done a couple other things here and there, mostly adding/modifying parts on other things. But this is my first ground up project, starting from only lumber and screws.

The idea for a riser for my toolbox came from another post here on GJ, and given how messy my workbench normally is, it was clear that setting it directly on the bench would mean I couldn't access the bottom drawers a little too often :lol_hitti

As a bonus, now I have a spot for my rotary tool

That is the foundation that many highly skilled persons started their humble beginnings. Smart, simple, and best of all useful projects! Great job! Now throw some stain on it to match the tool box.

Nice job on the riser! Just wondering, do you have the front panel for your box? That looks like an old Kennedy Machinist box, if it is, it should have a panel that covers the drawers so you can secure it when you want.

I do have the front panel, but it's in pretty sad shape. Also, after some research I'm 95% sure it's not a Kennedy.

It has the same drawer layout as a Kennedy 520, but the pulls say otherwise. Nice riser. I may have to make one so I can put some drill indexes or something under mine.

Yeah, the storage area was just a bonus for me. I know myself too well to expect the bottom drawers to be usable on a regular basis on my bench without a riser :lol_hitti

Nice job - every voyage begins with a first step.

I've been thinking about doing something similar with drawers instead of open "bays" and it does point out the "clutter in front' issue.

I looked over at my machinist chest and it's blocked by a bunch of **** sitting in front of it.

Wow, so simple, yet so useful. I have been beating myself up for a long time about setting things in front of my Kennedy 520 because the next thing I would need was in the bottom drawer. I might just have to knock one of those up before I move the table saw. Thanks for the inspiration, and nice job. Are you going to paint or stain it? Keith
