First "floor" tool for an (old time) DIYer

Well, it looks like I will have a garage shop in my lifetime ! No big plans now, except upgrading the power to a 60A load center (currently 2 bare bulbs and one duplex outlet). I do mostly small engine/auto repair but a little bit of everything.

There are tons of lightly used 25+ year old Craftsman "floor" tools available for reasonable prices, but I am trying to decide what to buy first.

I have a compressor (although a larger one would be nice), and a really crappy (but FREE) "portable" table saw (no stand) and a 3/8" bench top drill press.

2 things high on my priority list are a combo disc/belt sander (9" disc, 6"x 48" belt) and a 12" band saw. The band saw MUST have a speed reducer so it can cut metal.

Which should I look for first ?

It depends on what you do or want to do. The perfect set of tools for me may be **** for you.

since you already have a benchtop drill press, i think i'd look for a disk/belt sander...

i've fabricated a lot of stuff over the years with not much more than a corded drill and a 4 1/2" grinder.

but it's nice to have the other stuff now.
i just could really never justify the cost of the stuff. i got lucky alst year and won a $1000 merchandise credit from an industrial supplier.
came home with a larger benchtop drill press/vise, disk/belt sander, hand shear, sanding belts and disks.
it does makes stuff a little easier, but it does take up some space.

Buy the tool you will need to use first. Problem solved.

Keep a list of tools you would like to own. Those that would have allowed you to complete a job without outsourcing machining etc. Then decide if those are regular use, so you can prioritize or de-prioritize them.

In general, buying what you need, when you need it, unless you find a screaming deal, is the way to get stuff done.
