Moved from northeast mass to southern nh about a month ago. Very excited to have a 4 car detached garage that was built in 2012 and never used (build permit still on the wall). I need to epoxy the floor before it gets ruined, put a stain on the outside wood to prevent further damage (waterline from snow). And I would love to raise a section of the ceiling to add a lift. Right now it's just open beams and there's no insulation or drywall anywhere. I don't need it to be perfect but would like to be able to retain ac/heat if I need to work during extreme temps. If anyone has any ideas on the ceiling height issue or any other help, I'm basically a novice with this being my first home, but I learn quick and look forward to making my nice shop.

Forgot to add it's a 20x40 if anyone was wondering.

Love it, great space, and welcome to the forum! I also moved from MA to southern NH, you're probably not too far from me.

Thanks! I'm in Sandown. I still work near Boston but would much rather live up here. Can't get 5.5 acres down in mass for this price! :bounce:

That thing is on point! Im not seeing ANY sort of electrical in it though...

It does have one switch and an outlet below it...i don't know where it even comes from, I'll have to borrow my locating equipment from my work, digsafe experience finally comes in handy! Haha

I hear ya. I'm in Derry, and commute to Andover for work. Live free or die!

You're garage was an inspiration. It looks so much better finished. I didn't think I wanted to do that to mine but you did an awesome job and now I want to haha

Really nice garage and open to potential being left at that stage.

The only thing that would bother me is having the trees that close, especially in that first pic.

Thanks man, I appreciate that. This was my first house/garage too, had to save up for a few years before I was able to tackle it!

Yeah that pine tree will probably be the first thing to come down, there's plenty of trees I think a couple around the garage can be sacrificed

This is a very cool garage. The first thing I'd do is insulate it but it would be a real shame to cover up all that beautiful woodwork.

Thanks! Yeah I do want to finish it after seeing some of the awesome projects on here. I like the wood look too but I also like being comfortable haha

I have never owned or been around horses. Someone told me they are just like big dogs. Yours seem to fit that description.

Nice garage, I wish my first house would have had a garage as big as yours.

Great garage & nice projects! The mini horseys look like they'd be fun too, thanks for showing them off.
What are your plans for the Firechicken?

Wow, I didn’t realize how much time has passed since I posted here. I got overwhelmed with the new house and very large property that I haven’t done anything to the garage. I’m at the point now where it’s just become full of too many projects and car parts.

The 71 Firebird I want to fully restore but now I’m at the point where I just want to get it on the road so I can enjoy then fully rebuild later. I got an 84 trans am with 305 and a 5 speed. Thought I could save it for cheap and drive it while I worked on the 71. Turns out the trans was grenaded and the motor would need freshening up to the point that it’s not worth doing the work. Trying to unload that now but at $700 with tons of extra parts nobody is biting.

My new goal is to get the 84 trans am out. Clean up all the parts and store them in my shed. And then I can start working on getting a sub panel out there so I can start wiring and finish the inside with some insulation and drywall. Again, I have a ton of projects with the house and yard that I’m not sure when I’ll get to that point.

I’ve been trying to find people with a 20x40 garage so I can get an idea on how they have their layout for workbench and tools. If anyone reading this has something similar could you post a link to your build thread? Thank you

Here is a picture I took after cleaning up a bit. It’s now a massive mess again because I have no real storage or cabinets yet (or any lights! Lol)

Nice space when it's empty, right? 20' wide is very narrow and really leaves no room on the sides to work or put benches. BUT, if you put all of your equipment on casters, the layout is not important. Everything in my shop is on casters except one bench, one lathe and the FrankenMill. The stomp shear and even the hydraulic press are on casters. All of this stuff gets rolled along one wall when not in use.
I have seven benches/workstations that are on casters as well and they serve as my main work tops and can roll wherever needed. Bandsaws, chop saws, table saw and sand blasting cabinets are all on casters.

That’s a good idea. Both my current toolboxes roll and I have a mobile work cart I picked up at a swap meet that will be handy. I’m thinking I might build a workbench in the back left corner and angle the 71 Firebird across the back two bays. Then I’ll have two spots up front, one for quick maintenance and another for short term projects that I wouldn’t get done in just one or two days.

Here’s a quick sketch of what I’m thinking, I’m not concerned with losing an extra spot for a work bench too much, and if possible might put a lift where the Firebird would be.... it’s all still a work in progress :bounce:

I’ve taken care of that pine tree in front, the larger tree is a little scary but I kind of like having the shade, and it’s not in the way.

You can see the lack of tree in this picture
