Garage is coming a long nicely, love that high lift door, I have got to say I am very jealous of the height of your ceiling! Good idea on the under deck shed, we had something very similar in my house growing up. Very convenient, and more importantly frees up some garage space!

Great thread man! I think ive seen your car on instagram before.

You really lucked out on that garage man! Im super jealous! I am definitley looking forward to getting one of those Liftmaster's in my garage soon.

I was golfing at Apple Creek during that hailstorm. Came right over top of us and just let loose. It was nuts. Airdrie streets were flooded over in a lot of places.

Haha omg instafamous. I HIGHLY recommend it, its such a wicked unit, won't ever go back to a normal opener again. Yeah a lot of streets were just swamped, I am glad I wasn't driving in it!

Glad to see another calgarian !

Wow- that was some hail storm it literally kicked the **** out of your house and garage. Make sure you get several bids on replacing the siding, and other repairs, insurance companies make there money by not paying what they should, also document everthing, date/time/name for every insurance co phone call, keep all emails. Just to cover your ****. Garage is cool, good luck.

Well I got a bunch done today on my "get this **** outta my garage" shed build.

Started off the day putting up a rubber liner above where I'll keep my weed whacker and lawn mower, and other things like grass seed. The deck naturally slopes to back of property so It'll run off just fine. The liner is actual Pond Liner for use in backyard water features, worked out nicely!

Then finally onto the walls!

Finally starting to feel like I was getting somewhere

Starting to get the framing ready for the gate/door

14891971799_8e475a1c80_b.jpg

Made this little hanger under the liner for the whacker.

15078310432_6dd64c4d46_b.jpg

Pulled this unit off the garage wall and repositioned some hooks. Previous owner of house made it, it's not welcome in my man pad lol.

I've already learned so much, my confidence was building and I decided to work straight through dinner time… man on a mission here. :p

I'm excited to get it all done, it's already soooo much better than that ugly useless weed nest it was before! I may have put a few shovels in it already.. gotta take her for a test run you know.. heh :D

Haha ya man great to see projects nearby on a typical lot size in Alberta. When I see the folks on this forum with the 1/4 and 1/2 acre lots I can't help but get jealous, that is unheard of out here! Hell my lot is 6000sqft with and it is considered huge!

The under deck shed looks great! Quick question, are you planning on encasing the bases of the walls in concrete, or leave them in the ground as is? Also for the pond liner that you used; is the intention to redirect the water away from the lawn mower and run off onto the concrete pavers below? Are you concerned about water pooling underneath with the walls in place now (mainly during the spring melt)?

Yeah the intention is to flow water away from mower and anything else I don't want to get wet. I dug down far enough and for the end of the pavers near the door I'm using gravel so my thought is that the water will flow under and/or in between the boards since I gave them extra spacing. The grade of my back yard is pretty steep so it should flow out nicely. I'm just going to leave them in the ground as such, no concrete, as that may hinder water flow.

Great work, I like the under the deck storage... Without my backyard shed there is no way my garage would be as functional! Hello from Edmonton, and sorry about the hail storm.

That's the goal, more garage fun space! I sadly don't have room for a shed in my back yard with my plan for a lower patio area so this was my only option. However, I'm glad I made use of this space, looks so much better.

Onward to more progress.. just finished up 30 minutes ago!

Began today with making the gate, had to get that outta the way.

I went a little crazy on the reinforcement - but I hate flimsy doors, they always mis-align later with all the wobble.

$1540 with exterior keypad. Everything included.

Edit: I thought you meant the whole thing, I paid cash as a package deal, not sure of the individual cost for ONLY high lift mod

If you check the beginning photo you can see that the beams for the deck didn't line up properly, it just worked out easier to make the one side flush with the deck. It wasn't ideal, but the deck was built by hobbits balancing ladders on fake ****

They do sell under-deck gutters you could use and make that whole space rain-free. Usually called under-deck ceiling systems.

this is so far from the truth. get your facts straight. do some research and stop making up BS.

Insurance companies make money by investing a PORTION of the EARNED premiums. The vast majority of the premiums are paid out to people in need. Not to people who scam or is fraud.

-Exterior Keypad

Damn! I'm screwed, I also need to tag on a full new garage door to that price. Might have to make some compromises.

Does the lock feature come as standard or was that an extra?

I like under deck storage - down here a lot of of the HOA's don't allow shed's - so I'd be doing exactly what you did if I had too.

I had my Craftsman garage door opener **** out - and I installed the Liftmaster 8500 as well. I got it on Amazon for ~$300 with free shipping.

The install took the better part of a day - but it wasn't that bad.

I didn't do the rail mod - but I really like that you got those up and out of the way.

I positioned my Max Jax between the rails and do not have a problem getting my Corvette up in the air.

Yeah I probably could of done the lift install by my self, however I work out of town 3/4 weeks a month and just wanted it done before winter. I have so many other things on the go haha.

The issue with the garage door rails being as low as they were was not the lifting of my car inbetween them, but using the hoist for storage and having the garage door hit the car when it is stored in the air.

How is life at Albian, working a 14/7? I worked on the expansion about seven years ago.

I like the high lift door and new location of the opener, I will have to look into that in a couple years when I can finally add my dream NSX to my garage. I only have a 10' ceiling, but should be able to squeeze an NSX on a lift right above the IS.

Ugh that would be too awesome! Soft spot for NSX's.

Albian is pretty good, we're currently in the works of spending another billion of Shell's money to expand our centrifuge project further haha. So plenty of work going on.

The problem with the opener is that beside installing the new motor it also needs new hardware. The whole mechanism is different. My garage is petty small, I don't even know if it would fit here. I don't know how DIY friendly this would be!

Well I am back after over a year... looking at tackling more of the garage this fall/winter. I had to do a ton of work on my fun car and I ended up buying a daily driver/workhorse so that stole some funds from the garage.

I sold my Lexus IS300 which took a lot of work to return it back to factory form - so there's space to work on the garage now

But here is some work I got done, all the lighting a guy needs
Also added some outlets for:
-The high lift conversion (up beside it, no more extension cord)
-The infrared heater (soon to exist I promise myself)
-Work lights/stereo.

Up next is:
-Gas line ran to garage
-Infrared heater in garage
-Drywall mud/tape
-Paint
-Organize everything finally, and see what I need from there.

Some photos of the new truck/lighting and such

Looks like it's really coming along! That looks like a LOT of lights in there. Nice truck too. I can't afford a new truck right now, I so settled with a used Grand Cherokee haha. Keep posting updates man, I will be in your position in less than a year from now and can't wait for my first garage/house!

Alright this is going to be a big update - it's been a while. Hang in there.

Well in preparation for this winter I wanted to get the heater plumbing completed and the heater purchased.

The gas line had to wrap itself all the way around the house - through my new shed (under the stairs) and subsequently across the yard

Here's how it started:
Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Turned into this:
Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Then filled in... (landscaping to come after winter)
Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Then the heater assembly began
Calcana 15ft Infrared Heater
With optional Modulating Valve

The modulating valve essentially allows you do to like "Low-Med-Full" heat in series with your thermostat. This reduces any paint fading - and is great for working underneath. You can go to low heat so your brain isnt cooking while wrenching under the heater.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

The mounting (It wasnt meant to be beautiful - as this will be painted later) it was meant to be sturdy as heck with some adjusting allowed.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Hung like a horse !

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

And all the gas lines ran! - I had the electrician place an outlet up there when the lights were getting hooked up to keep all the cords up top (mostly out of sight)

So then I had to tackle some drainage issues... my garage (for lord knows whatever reason) was not built with a concrete pony-wall. This means it is extremely susceptible to water seeping in between the walls and the pad.

As seen (depressingly) here:
Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

and so on and so on. Definitely some problem areas.

So let's get down to the bottom of it...

Using my new gas line for reference - here is the grade of the back-yard in reference to the gas line & garage wall.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

and here is the same measurement - inside that wall.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Notice something off?

Yeah ... that's a 5" difference.

So - the ground outside, is 5" higher than where the wall meets my slab. So therefor there is 2 reasons why water will be coming in:

1) It is easier to come in the garage than to drain around it
2) There is no drain-path around the garage

Moving to the corner of my garage - the path with least resistance to the back ally ... we find this:

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Ok, fine, its some wood, probably is not blocking much drainage.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Ummmm....

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

UMMMMMMM...... CUE THE HEMI

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

UMMMMMMM.....

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

61978652.jpg

That's all the photos I have of that project because I got very very frustrated. Essentially I trenched around 1/2 my garage trying to improve drainage. We'll see how it turns out in spring.

Alright - now onto some shelving.

Throwback to this photo:

_MG_9291 by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Notice that super-sick 4x6 holding up that shelf on the right side of the photo?

I'm not a fan.

So - moving forwards - here is the "before" photo:

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

and then..

ta da

I plan on putting a curtain along the length of it .. black or dark grey. Shower curtain style for easy access. I'll make it look decent somehow.

I also fixed how this shelf looked (reference photo at top of post)

Here's it now:

Well here's the stuff you all probably want to see:

I bought this stuff:
Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

I hate wheels on tool chests so I built these out of some 2x6's and 3/4" spruce

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Then i realized the economy is ****, oil is 30$ a barrel and I work in the oil patch .. so I temporarily organized my garage until I feel comfortable spending a bunch of money on drywall finishing and painting.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Some organization ****... did the canadian tire drawer liners in all the drawers

Well the whole "responsible spending" thing didnt last long, because the lack of symmetry was killing me.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

I also went on to paint the bases and put some black metal edging, for that "I dont know what I'm doing but I want to be fancy" touch.

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

And i hated that shelf so I did some painting and modifications

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

trying to figure out how to make the black look better... maybe some stainless metal edging or something.

Or just say screw it - it's a shop.

Some LED lights and such

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

Put these in there

Untitled by Dallas Owen, on Flickr

And then I left for work out of town.

I'll be finishing it off and organizing it once again when I get home .. didnt have time to take half decent photos of all the little stuff I did.
