First impression of SK and Wright......

I purchased a SK and Wright ratchet set on Epstein Day (along with a wrench of each) and thought I would share my opinions. I don't have access to SK or Wright to see first hand in a store, but after reading numerous threads regarding these, I decided to take the plunge...

The ratchets...

The Wright ratchets appeared to be shipped dry. Tooth count was double compared to the SK's. Handles were very comfortable. Chrome perfect. The SK ratchets had noticeably less drag as the Wrights. Very smooth. Hard to believe they have 1/2 the tooth count.Only complaint I would have was the 3/8 knurled handle was rough to the touch. (1/2 and 1/4 were smooth) Nothing big, maybe would be a little annoying if working without gloves all day. I wonder if it missed a final finishing... Chrome on all three was perfect.

The wrenches....

The SK was extremely similiar to my Craftsman Professionals. (I believe SK used to make them for Sears) Both wrenches had very good chrome.

If I had to pick between the two for a complete wrench set, I would get the SK's only because they are available in long pattern. Other than that, can't go wrong with either one...

As far as ratchets... it's hard to say. I prefered the Wright handles, but I liked the action of the SK. Maybe soaking the Wrights in oil overnight or with use over time will loosen them up. Again just like the wrenches, can't go wrong with either one...

Knurling will be rough in the beginning. That is the purpose of it....to give a non-slip grip to a handle.

And yes, the ratchets will loosen up in time. No need to take them apart like others on this site might do.

Interesting comparison. I have some full polished Craftsman Professional combination wrenches also, and I have heard they were made by SK also. At times I have wondered why both of them don't offer a quick release tear drop ratchet. I do like knurled handles but both versions look really nice.

Was bored tonight.... Took some pictures, was a little surprised by some. Would have guessed the SK and Craftsman would have been closer... Ended up the Craftsman Industrial (Armstrong) and Wright were the closest except for the length....

With all the problems occurring at Armstrong lately like flooded warehouses and production lines halted due to broken machinery I wouldn't be surprised if they were made at the same place. Armstrong has also switched owners again also.

My Allen ratchet has a knurled handle and I like the feel of it.

Both are killer ratchets. The Wright is a dual pawl and will "loosen" after 50 or so hours of use.By "loosen" I simply mean reduced back drag. One is not superior over the other. Both are time tested. If I had to pick one ? Probably a Tuff1(SK-Facom 72) LOL
The combo wrenches. They're wrenches.
I prefer a Williams Superrench or Proto ASD to either.
Opinions are like........

As far as SK and Wright are concerned you have to know where to buy them IMO because they are not marketed like some of the other big brand names.
