First Impression: Retracta air hose reels

After getting concerned I was going to injure myself in the garage by tripping over my air compressor hose, I decided it was time to buy an air hose reel.

The trick was to find a hose reel that could fit in the one available location 7 feet off the ground and in a tight space. More metal hose reels weigh about 45-50lbs and would be problematic for installation.

I then saw a new-in-box Retracta 50 foot AR100 hose reel with hose for sale. Retracta is an Australian manufacturer of hose reels made from polypropylene and weigh only 22 lbs. They are also rated for wash down use. Mine was an older discontinued model that was made for the US market with NPT threaded fittings and sold through NAPA. While mine is labeled as made in Australia, the current lower cost Retracta hose reels are labeled as designed in Australia.

They are designed for mounting in a variety of orientations. With the pivoting king pin type bracket for swiveling, mounting was pretty easy. I made an adapter plate from a scrap aluminum plate to straddle two studs and mounted the steel bracket to the wall. Then just lift up the reel and slide the pivot pin in place.

So far it work pretty well.

I've got an identical looking hose reel from Legacy. It's black in color.

Edit: Wow at the price. I paid like $65 from Amazon since it was missing the bracket. Legacy sent me one for free.
