First of three shops

I finally reached substantial completetion of the wood shop portion of my shops. So I spent some time taking pictures. It has two garage doors so technically, I suppose it's a garage.

This is in the back half of a 60 x 25 metal building on the back of our property. I've also got a 1-car mechanical shop for metal working, a 3-car automotive garage plus another workspace or so.

What is the large PVC for, vacuum system?

I also like how you have everything labeled (outlets, etc) so as no one is confused as to what is what. Good idea.

The PVC is exactly that, a dust collection system for cabinet and miter saw. It has a 18 gauge bare copper wire running thru it grounded to building ground to prevent static buildup. Dust collector is located in a closet with 4 layers of 1/2" sheetrock for noise isolation / fire suppression.

Worked in communications contracting for years. Like my things labled.

I find it interesting that the pvc is screwed together rather than glued. Was this to make it easy to make changes?

Where does the pipe lead to in the floor or is that the pipe leading from various parts of the room?

I would like to see some detail pctures of the drawer unit under the island. I assume that you built it and it looks great. Can I have a few pictures of the frame/drawer slide detail. It is agreat looking unit and something I would like to steal some ideas from so as to make one of my own.

Here are a few closeups of the drawer units under the workbench. I built these close to 25 years ago from some plans in a 1949 woodworking book from England. They have served me well. I keep spare tools, plumbing/electrical supplies and a lot of parts and assemblies in them.

The base of each drawer is 3/8" ply extending into dados cut into the sides. A bit of paraffin helps them slide in/out easily.

I dadoed the sides as 2' x 4' pieces, then cut them apart on my table saw. And used fiber-board for the sides of the drawers to save some cost. PolyU on the fronts.

The assemblies are on casters so they can be rolled out for floor cleaning.

I also included the back side of the island, which stores hand power tools. This assembly sliudes out on casters so it can double as a bench or support.

When I raced Slot Cars we had smaller boxes built the exact same way with the dados for drawers to slide in. I wished I had the time to build something like that for my shop.

Re: the PVC pipe screwed together.... yep, that lets me disassemble in case of blockage or changes.

The piping into the floor is the 3/4" copper air lines and, (of course) the PVC dust collection going out to the cabinet saw/router in the center of the room.

Since I converted this space from what was originally going to be a big metal storage building, I had to slot the floor with a concrete saw to lay all this in place. That portion of the work effort pretty well sucked.

Wow.... Great spaces, What do you repair in the little electronics nook. I think someone asked you that in the other thread but I dont remember if it was answered or not.

Very nice, how large are the spaces, The way I understand it, your taking a large building and making several differnt shop areas under 1 roof. . Are the walls between areas 2X4s, plywood and peg board? I saw you put plywood down for a floor in the wood area. What are the sizes of the different shop areas?

Very nice shop! Did you raise the floor for the dust vac runs? And thats why there is plywood? I really like the wood floor look. I may be doing that to the back section of my shop for the wood work area. Thanks for sharing the shop.
