I agree on a large sheet of cardboard. I got this Hopkins Flo Tool oil drain pan at Orielly's for like 20 bucks and for DIY, it's the kicks. It's very robust and no frills. It holds 11 quarts and you won't slop oil on the floor moving it around and draining it with a 5 quart oil change. The rectangular profile is long enough to contain oil sump and filter drainage at the same time on an average vehicle. The filter rest is very convenient I should add (for the old filter...not the new). If your drain plug has a rubber grommet, one extra step I like to take is torquing down the drain plug to factory spec which is often printed in DIY repair manuals (roughly 20 ft/lbs). Over torquing distorts and shears the grommet. It doesn't have to be exact and an inexpensive beam torque wrench is fine for this.
