Hi everyone, nice to be here.

First post and I found this site looking for inspiration on a possible detached garage build.

I have a 19X20 garage that is too small for the wifes highlander and for me to park our third (summer only) car in the garage. They fit but its tight and we have young kids that would surely lead to door dings.

I am thinking of adding a detached garage in the back yard. Due to our lot size I can probably only fit a 20x26 garage. Our house is on a slab so I would like to incorporate some storage above the trusses, as storage for us is limited.

Is 20x26 worth it in my situation? Could I realistically store my summer car and maybe another project car in there, and still have room to work on cars? If I wanted a hoist, which style would be recomended? 4 Post to be able to store the cars vertically?

Would appreciate thoughts from another person who was limited width wise on space, and still wants to be able to wrench.

You would be adding 520ft2 to the 380ft2 you already have. 136% increase. 900 ft2 total. Plenty of room to park a couple of cars in the new space, turn the old garage into your shop.

I built a 16x26 detached garage once, it was all I had room for, it was right at the setbacks on three sides. Tight, but it worked well as a shop. I did pour a slab outside the overhead door and put all the stationary power tools on wheels so I could roll them outside when the weather was nice or I needed the space inside.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

So after sitting on it for a while I think I can eat up more yard and fit a 28 X 24 garage.
I would want 12 ft ceilings but due to not having a basement I would also want to use the attic for storage.

Does 28X24X 12 with storage trusses work? How about Gambrel style trusses?
