Hi Guys this forum has been a huge help during my first restore. I really enjoyed doing it and think I might have found a new pastime. Here a few before and afters.

Very nice job, love the color. Did you use rattle cans, if so what colors?

Thank you! It is rustoleum hammered lite blue. The only place I could find it around town was at Ace Hardware. The red is just rustoleum gloss red. Finished it all off with rustoleum glossy clear coat.

OMG!

What an excellent first post and what an excellent job.

You must tell us all the steps...

Thank you! Being this was my first time I don't have a lot of different tools for this.

- I took all the hardware off, and stripped it down to the bare steel mainly using an electric drill and a wire wheel brush. Cleaned up the hardware and hard to reach places with a Dremel. Hand sanded then primed the box.

Rattled canned all the paint with rustoleum hammered lite blue (2 whole cans for the entire box ), the tray was gloss red then used rustoleum glossy clear coat on everything.

I wanted to get the hardware chrome plated but decided against it and instead just hit it with about 4 coats of glossy clear coat on all the hardware. It turned out better than I thought it maintained a little of the aged character.

Pop riveted it all back together using a cheap Harbor Freight riveter.

Thanks for all the good words the forum was great in glad I found you guys!

Ryan:in case somebody didn't already mention it to you welcome to Garage Journal and looks like you will be a great addition to the gang.

i own a couple of those that are in great shape and a couple that might have more rust than yours did before you started your restoration.

did you sandblast, sand, wire wheel to prep before painting or just paint over the rust??

Nice work and in case you don't know you can load that up so it almost isn't a carry box because it will get pretty heavy.

Yep, very nice job indeed. You do realize that it's all downhill from here? Today its a toolbox. tomorrow a drill press, pretty soon the family will be starving 'cause you spent your paycheck on Hammered paint and Craigslist ads. Then the wife catches you banging the neighbors wife and hauls your *** into divorce court and takes everything you have including yer tools and then... Oh, sorry, welcome to the Garage Journal!:lol_hitti

Very nice! Ever since I found this site I've been loading up on projects from craigslist (Craftsman block grinder, King Sealy DP, Wilton Bullet, etc...) but have yet to start on them.

As I've not done any metal work I've been hesitant to start on any of them. When I was younger my dad gave me his craftsman toolbox. My thought was to start on that as my first project and then I saw your thread, with the very same box, and now I'm inspired! Thanks and again, good job!

BTW - which HF riveter did you use? I looked at their website and see several. Having no metal working experience I'm a little lost on stuff like that. Thanks!

It's the black Pittsburg one. It has a swivel head. I got it for around 10 bucks and it worked great for what I needed it to do. It was the first time I used a riveter so I don't have anything to compare it to but it worked well.

Go for it man. I think we are in the same boat. This was my first project as well. This craftsman box is pretty easy to work on. Use a wire wheel brush drill attachment and take it down to the bare steel. A Dremel type tool is recommended as well.

The other thing prime before you paint and do a lot of coats of color. Don't be afraid to use some 400 sand paper if you mess up the paint. Sand it down and go again.

Hit me up if you have questions. I will try and help if I can. Can't wait to see yours when you get it done.

Great job on that tool box. I am looking around for one to fix up. You did right by starting with a smaller project. Last year I did my first project, a 19 drawer Craftsman bottom, middle and top chest. It was overwhelming, and way to much for a first time project, but I got it finished.

Nice work. I have the same one that was my grandfathers. Don't really use it of anything and it is a little rusty. What are your plans for it?

Thanks !

I did this one as a gift for my dad on Father's Day. I have a feeling he will just display it.

Thank you ! I'm hoping to do a craftsman or snap on chest at some point.

Nicely done. I think you did just the right amount of restoration, especially if it isn't going to be an 'everyday' box. Those latches look awesome after all that time...
