Why is it that you think the "wrenches, ratchets, extensions" are worth it but spending on their sockets is a "waste"? That really makes no sense.
Now if you are trying to say that it is a good idea to prioritize wrenches and ratchets ahead of sockets, that makes more sense.
I think Snap-on makes some of the best sockets out there, very complete range of sizes and variety, and they are quite enjoyable to use after you have the wrenches and ratchets covered.
I have no regrets over any of my Snap-on socket purchases and don't consider that a "waste".

You're right, I wasn't clear enough in that post. I should have said the Snap-on sockets were a waste for an initial purchase. It used to be that 20 years ago, if you wanted high quality sockets, you had to either buy Snap-on or Proto. But in recent years, the Taiwanese have gotten real good at copying Snap-on's sockets.

I don't know if you have a paypal account but you could probably find them pretty cheap on epay.

Nope no Paypal...I'm also too young to have a credit card so I just go to every single garage sale and flea market that shows up.

Buy Stanley. Save the $143 left over for school. Put it in a bank and leave it alone. You'll have plenty of time to buy glamour tools later. Older mechanics eyes aren't good enough to read the logos on your sockets anyway.

Hey Joey, just to let you know for the future, one of the the areas where Snap-on really accels over their competitors is in universal joints and universal sockets. I said Kobalt sockets are pretty decent, but nobody makes a better universal socket than Snap-on.

Telling someone to buy Kobalt sockets instead of Snap-on is crazy. They are not equals. I felt the same way that you did until I bought Snap-on sockets. Ill tell my quick story about how I became a believer.
I was changing out springs /shocks on my car. I went to remove the 13mm nut that holds my sway bar drop link to the trailing arm. I put my craftsman 6 point socket on it, and stripped it rounded the corners really badly. I was using my craftsman 1/4 19v impact. I grabbed the Snap-on 13mm 6 pt socket, and used a ratchet this time. It took the nut right off like it was its job. Now when you look at both a Snap-on and Craftsman socket side by side, they appear identical. Almost all companies use "Flank drive" now. My experience confirms that "There is a difference."

So you're saying that you rounded a bolt using a CM 6-point socket with an impact drill so therefore the CM sockets are garbage, but then your 6-point SO socket and a hand ratchet did the job perfectly? Maybe if you used a hand ratchet with that CM socket, you wouldn't have rounded the bolt. Your post confirms nothing other than the fact that you should always use the right type of tool for the job at hand.

Also, how do you round a bolt with a 6-point socket unless it's rusted and/or deformed?

It was rusted to begin with. I tried using a ratchet after I stripped it with the impact.... still slipped. Only the Snap-on removed it without any complaints.
