I found an add on craigslist near me:
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/tls/980047907.html

I am wondering if this is a decent buy for a compressor that will be used for mechanical work 90+% of the time (ie. not for extensive body work, sand blasting, painting, etc).

If it looks like a decent compressor, what is a fair price to pay for it and what are some things I should look at before I pay for it to make sure it wasn't overly abused?

Lastly, before everyone mentions getting a higher powered compressor or biggger tank, space is limited and I only have 120v service (220 is not an option).

Thank you in advance,
Pete

Good compressor!! It's about as good as it gets with a 110v option. At $225 it's reasonable, but I've seen them go for much less on my local CL -- new they are just below $400.

That is about the best 115V unit for the money. That looks like a slightly older model from before they switched to the chinese pumps. We sell those reconditioned for $299, so see if he would take a bit less. He will probably take $200, but even at $225 it is not bad.
Make sure it pumps up fairly quickly, shuts off when it is supposed to, and doesn't make too much noise. Parts are available for these units and they are easy to service, so it should last a long time.

I picked up the compressor today and managed to talk the seller down a little bit. His garage was spotless and he had already gone through the touble of testing everything and putting brand new oil in the compressor before I got there, so I think I got a good deal.

Here are a few pics just because (the last picture is the best because it has the great three word phrase):

That motor is about 1 to 1-1/2 hp. Probably draws about 18 or 19 amps. The 5 hp is that bogus "starting" hp. Good compressor however, if you are limited to 120v current.

I think the 5 HP is called the peak horsepower .. alot of manufacturers advertise this way ..
