Way back about two years or so ago, I watched a few videos from YouTuber Eric Rhoten https://www.youtube.com/@oldave100/videos
about making wood signs using a router freehand.
I learned a few techniques and I modified my DeWalt router and also made an acrylic router base (with handles) like he uses.....BUT, I never did make a sign....

My wife makes quilts (a lot of quilts!!) that she gives as gifts to friends and family. She has sold a few and has an Etsy store also.
Coming up in November she has an opportunity to have a 10x10 tent space in a local craft fair...SO, she came to me last week and wanted me to make her a sign!

She calls her quilt making adventures "9th DAUGHTER QUILTS" because she's the ninth daughter from a family of 12 (9 girls & 3 boys ~ she's the youngest girl)
I'll be routing the sign using a 6ft. Cedar fence picket.

I'm using a 1/8" and 1/4" carbide 2 flute straight router bit in either a DeWalt DWP611 (fixed base/corded) and a DeWalt DCW600B (20V Cordless) router (the acrylic base will interchange on either motor) and for lettering I'm using an assortment of laser cut cardboard letters and stencils.

Layout done....

I did the routing outside for easier clean-up since the routers had no dust collection hook-ups....I also thought the afternoon sun would be great to see the lines of the letters, but I had to use a black marker to thicken up the lines....
The sharp router bits cut the soft cedar like buddah, very easy to control

All routed....

Next up we need some color!! :rocker:

Have you considered selling signs?

Great looking sign especially when it is your first attempt (I assume?). Also I like your custom throat plate for your table saw, those holes help improve dust collection?

Welp, you inspired me! I have been meaning to make a sign for our mountain cabin and just kept stalling. Where did you get those chipboard letters?

Very well done effort and I hope your wifey’s sales are enough to buy you some beers!

Excellent work! You must have had a very consistent cedar board to get all those letters straight. I have attempted hand routing pockets or slots and just the slightest difference in hardness resulted in my not having a straight line.

Impressive!

Be my luck I'd be on the last letter or two and catch a knot, kick, and shoot the router across the sign 🤣

Yep, first time....I put off trying roughly two years
The throat plate started out solid and just for zero clearance, but because I don't have an over blade guard with dust collection I still got a lot of sawdust on top of the saw....so, I drilled it out and I still get about the same sawdust across the top of the saw :dunno:

Go for it....you can do it!
I got the chipboard letters years ago at Hobby Lobby. and I looked the other day and it seems they have been discontinued :rolleyes2

Did you run that through a planer or sand it ?
Hand sand and random orbit sander

That's pretty amazing for freehand - I can't imagine trying to control a router out of a table or without a bearing/guide bushing.

The cedar fence pickets are super soft and routes with little to no resistance.
I bought the boards 2 yrs ago and they've been drying in my shop since and they were very light weight.
Most of the reasons I put off trying to route signs is I didn't think I would be steady handed enough to make a straight line.
This cedar was a dream to route but I know I'll have to hone my technique and do a lot of practicing when I try anything harder than this cedar.
The acrylic base with the two handles help to control and steady the routers movement....

I've seen videos of guys that can freehand sign super fast that rivals CNC routed ones!!!

I had that fear also :scared:
If you'll notice the letter "T" in QUILTS there is a knot near the bottom of it and I just knew the router would catch it and break out a large chunk.
So, before I routed it I took an utility knife and scored the line thru the knot, and then with a tiny engraving bit in a Dremel, I carefully removed the knot on the inside of the letter....

Here are some pics of the event I made the sign for.....
We had a good day yesterday at the Oolenoy Christmas Bazaar.
Mari sold 3 Quilts, 2 tablerunners, and 11 bowl coozies!
Not bad for her first ever event!
It was a beautiful fall day (73°) the turnout was low but everyone had a good time.
Looking forward to next year.....
