First time on a tool truck!

I have been buying tools my whole life, but as a hobbyist I have never had the opportunity to walk onto a tool truck. As luck has it, I was at my buddy's shop this afternoon and the Snap On guy rolled up! All aboard! It's probably a good thing that I don't have one that drives through my neighborhood like the ice cream man, cause my *** would be broke! It was like being in tool heaven; more shiny stuff than Tiffany's.

I have been dreaming about a set of Snappy Dual 80 ratchets, so I asked him for a price. For 1/4" standard length, 3/8" standard length, and 1/2" (about 15") he quoted me $250. It seems this is about what this set goes for used on Ebay. Any thoughts on weather or not this is a decent deal for these? He said the price was only good until the end of the month.

They list regular pricing on their website (sometimes with minor sales.)

The sales run by the truck owners are not commonly listed on the web.

There are a number of models of each Dual 80 ratchet in each drive size. So if you know the length, handle, flex, and quick release, you can look up the standard pricing on the snapon website and compare to the $250 group price.

I'm just a hobbyist as well but that seems reasonable to me, those ratchets are $315.85 total from Snap On's website so he's offering you about 20% off list.

For reference a local Matco dealer who is an acquaintance of mine (and I don't think was out to screw me over) sold me a 1/2 Matco ratchet for about 20% off list as well so that seems in line with what you were offered. (Or maybe we're just both being screwed, I guess we'll see what some others say!)

I got an F80 (standard 3/8" Dual 80) last year for Christmas and I love it. Damn things are like rabbits though, a few months later an FL80 and TL72 soon joined the F80 from a Snap On promo that was on their website, and I'm debating about picking up a standard length 1/2" S80A now too...

I would say worse a dealer would do is charge list since the prices are in the system and he rings them up just like a store. Now that said if you had cold hard cash in hand, if he is a smart dealer wanting hook a new customer, I bet he would swing a pretty good package that the website would never touch. I understand diy who don't have a dealer may like the website, but they are missing the the point of SO tools. It is personal service of a good dealer that makes to SO tools worth it. Outside of the web, I have zero access to proto, so the main reason I don't buy them. If it was that way with SO, I don't think I would buy SO either. I break something and need it now, one call and my dealer will be to my shop an hour. That is faster then I could run to sears to replace a craftsman.

Those Snap-on ratchets are worth every penny.

They are worth going hungry for even.

I agree they are awesome. Close second is my Cornwell ratchets. Even the 30t models are smooth as butter. But the snap ons take smooth to another level. Most of my ratchets are snap on and Cornwell.

I just recently got my first SO dual 80 ratchets...I have the f80 and the t72 for years all I had was craftsman RP and craftsman low profile(which I still like the low profiles) I had no idea what I was missing these snapons are the best thing since sliced bread as far as I am concerned.

The craftsman low profiles are actually really nice ratchets. I have the 3 that came with the socket modules last year(USA of course). If that was the standard craftsman ratchet they would have had a home run. The Kobalt standard ratchet is 72t and so is the husky. The new husky ratchets are very similar to the low profiles and they come in flex head. I am considering getting because of how thin the head is.

Dealers can charge whatever they want, more than list or less. There is no regulated pricing "in the system" as you put it.

OP, if this is just a T72, F80 and S80 that's not a deal, compared to ebay anyway, which would run about $150 for those 3. Snap-On does run special ratchet packages a few times a year though and there are some okay deals to be had. Flex and/or long versions of the 3 ratchets at $250 off the truck would be more in line with ebay.

I agree I have a 1/2" and a 1/4" and I love those 2 I still need to find me a 3/8" usa one. I see them on ebay when i look but usually when i look i am broke so i am just window shopping so to speak. the 1/4" is now my home 1/4" and my 1/2" will be as well once I get me a 1/2" dual 80.

My first time on Snap On tool truck today - tool palace? Eyes did not know which way to look. I was glad he was helping out a dude with his wants as that gave me ample opportunity to check it out. I had asked dealer to set aside a FRLF80, TRF72 ratchet and YA525A adapter for pick up. On impulse I picked up a 1/2" 24" breaker bar. Expensive but no regrets. Dealer was super cool too. I still have some wants but some will be hunted down on eBay as the price difference is too much for me.

I'd look up the specific items so I know exactly what sort of deal I am getting. If the truck stops at your friends shop, I would make that my contact point.

IMHO there is no reason to buy off the truck if you don't generate some goodwill with the driver for handling warranty items.

Snapon makes high quality long lasting tools with a strong warranty, which ironically means to me why not buy used if you can get a solid discount used. Local pawn wants 50% of Snapon list for used worn tools, and I won't pay that much. Anything material and the truck will give me something of the discount, and I refuse to warranty anything that wears out instead of breaks.
