I have an htp 221 tig machine. I've had it for about 6 months and I love it. I mainly weld steel though so my Hobart 210 MVP gets used more.

What is your power supply? most multi-process and tig machines run 3-phase what you need to be concerned about is not the process to bond the pieces but if that process will have the amperage supply to get proper penetration for maximum strength. I personally am a fan of miller products and the best bang for your buck is the 350 xmt cc I use one regularly for 6010 then 7018 and will be doing flux next with it. It is 1 and 3 phase compatible tig is a art flux core with todays technology is just as capable of providing a very strong and reliable weld on steel. If you intend on welding ss, ti, al and other alloys learn mig, flux and stick first then progress into tig for precision welds it takes years to master it. But really just get one that runs mig/flux/stick and mig spool gun you should find a less complicated welder than what I listed like a sync 250 pick one up used pay attention to the prices and what they sell for new etc. a lot of cl crack smokers on welders.

1.) Almost all tig machines run single phase primarily, especially transformer machines. Large, older mig machines, primarily power sources can be 3ph, but not many feeder built in machines.

2.) You honestly think a 350xmt is a "best bang for the buck" for the home user? :wtf:

The new Lincoln Powermig 210MP coming out this month. Search over! Mig/Tig/Stick in a sweet footprint. I'm buying one no question, will compliment my ESAB 250 Migmaster.

For all those that my be thinking that is the end all be all to their welding problems. Keep one thing in mind. It WILL NOT output AC tig, meaning thin(er) aluminum is going to be out of the question.

By the time you get that thing tooled up to do steel, stainless and aluminum, you will be on the north side of $1500.

Odds are the duty cycle won't be that great which won't much matter for a mechanic or race car guy -body man, but I need 100 percent when a fab job comes in.
The MP will probably be around 20% at 210 and 50 at 130 or so.All day long on 1/8".
I have tops and bottoms to weld on thirty three 4 x 4 .250 wall columns here in a little while. The guys are drilling and bending tops and bottoms. The tube is cut and racked.
That's 90 feet or so of bead. My 180 Lincoln can't play that game non stop at full blast. My old MM200 will yawn at it(280 amp rated machine).
My advice on aluminum is let someone else do the fine work. Someone who does it day in and day out. I used to. I don't now. I spit out a bead with the spool gun and stick stuff together these years.
Aluminum welding is completely different than steel or stainless. One minute the puddle is there and the nezt everything goes to hell..

That said: I too amp buying the MP210. If it runs great I'll sell my Esab 200 stick. That will in itself pay for that Lincoln.

I was just stating my opinion the OP did state he wanted one for precision work multi-process is where it is at. But if he wants a decent home welder get a Lincoln powermig 210 it will get it done then you will want bigger and better. I am a huge fan of flux core and stick with today's current technology you do not have to worry about bottles.
Yes the 350 xmt is a practical home welder for tig, mig, stick, flux and cac-g 3-phase all the way it depends on what you do and weld =) but that is me I would spend the money on a sa200 and a sae400 detroit also.

Why the in hell anybody would use flux core wire and stick welding expect for heavy industrial work is beyond me. It is messy and looks **** normally. Welding with gas is like having power brakes on your car it just makes life a heck of a lot easier and simpler.

I got to agree with that. A what welder thread brings out some terrible advice. Both from pros and amateurs. Like I mentioned more than once, if you don't have a machine start with a 180 class mig and go from there (assuming this is normal diy, maintenance or hobby).
There is a big difference between what "I like" , what my experience is and whats right for the guy asking. Usually the guy wants results, wants to build something and as much as one might fancy a Sa 400 its not for the home brew crowd.
I have been up and down in this a long time, own them all including a couple Sa's but in truth could do most of the work with a 175 feeder. We worked on a project all day yesterday, had our choice of machines and its what we used.

totally disagree that it looks like ****. Ive seen hundreds of stick welds that are every bit as nice as tig, solid wire mig, or dual shield wire mig. Stick is simple and cheap, thats why people do it. Its just not as easy to be proficient at it compared to grabbing a squirt-gun and fusing metal. Wirefeeder is the best thing for a home/hobby welder unless a guy just wants to learn to tig. I think its a no brainer to buy a mig unless you that not what YOU want. what ever you get post a pic and enjoy. there really isnt a bad choice if you dont have a welder. enjoy man

The miller mig 110 model works pretty well as long as you run gas on it instead of fluxcore. If your going to be doing a little more serious welding I would look for a Miller 251.
