I purchased land not to long ago that was pretty much all beaver ponds. The previous owner excavated the dams to the beaver ponds and then had the beavers trapped. I recently obtained the land and decided to dam the low spot of the pond back up. We had some heavy rains and the pond filled with water quite fast and is holding. Yesterday will all the rain my wife noticed that the pond was bubbling in the middle. I put my dive gear on and went down to the bottom of the pond. I noticed that there was a massive amount of water flowing from the ground. Our house is fed by artesian well and now the pond is. There are massive amount of boards that came out of the ground so I'm wondering if this was some sort of cap for the well?
Anyway I'm thinking about stocking it with brook trout. The water temp on 90+ days stays a whopping cold 50's. I was able to get some cobble stone, which I'm going to get a few more dump trucks full. There is currently brook trout in the pond with catfish and some perch. Whats the best way to keep them in the pond? Each spring we have large fish come out of the small brook up the waterfall and into the pond. Maybe I need a step system? I would like to see pictures if you have a fish pond.
