Just saw one of these at salvage yard. Guy wants $160. It's in decent shape but I didn't have hardened ball bearing. He was firm on price so I passed but said I'd research.

My seven year old wants to make a knife "the old way". I do have a chunk of RR track but don't know if that's enough.

On my phone so won't type any more. I'm happy to pay at the higher end of value & even lose a bit of money down the road if it means building something with my son.

But it's not very heavy, maybe 50 lbs so I don't want something not useful either.

Advice?

Doing the same thing with my 12 year old right now...rail's fine for starting out as an anvil. Either flatten the top with a grinder or mill, or even stand it on end, moves metal really fast with good hammer bounce. We just used a chunk as is to get going....if he takes to it, there's lots of videos on Youtube about making a rail anvil.
from my research, anything 2 bucks a pound or under for a good anvil (not a **** cast one) is a good deal....

Check with junebuggy here in the knives thread he can tell you 160 is not horrible but condition is everything and yep a railroad track chunk would would if that is easier on the wallet.
