Fisher & Norris Anvil

[Can I try?]

We took a family trip to the State Museum of New Jersey in Trenton today. This 1,400lb. Fisher & Norris anvil was on display in an exhibit titled 'Pretty Big Things.' I took a rough measurement of 4.5-5' from horn to heel.

Now THAT'S an anvil. Looks like it was never used, and at 5' OAL, that's one big ol' beast to forge some iron with.

I know it's in a museum, but the 'do not touch' sign is kind of funny...as if you could damage it.

Ironically, my profession and my hobby came together in an unexpected way recently when the Army R&D organization I have supported for a long time, lately as a consultant, was merged into a new Army 3-Star command called Army Futures Command, and they adopted a motto, "Forging the Future", with this insignia (i.e., shoulder patch)!

Makes you wonder if they wore Brooks Brothers 3-piece suits and acid-free white gloves when they wrestled a 1400-lb anvil up onto that stand.
