I can take a picture tomorrow if you like but I will explain what I did. I took a 2 foot long piece of a 1x4 board. Then I got a 2 foot piece of pvc pipe that is 2 inches in diameter, maybe 3 inches. I then cut the pvc pipe into 4' pieces. I then screwed it into my piece of wood and mounted it to the ceiling of my garage. all of my poles are out of the way and easily to get to when I need them. The tricky part was screwing the pieces of pcv to the wood. I ended up drilling a small hole right through the pcv.. then making one of the two holes large enough for my screw driver to fit through to scew in the screw. If you want a picture, let me know. Hope that helps.

I am not sure but a 2 foot piece of PVC is hard to cut into 4' sections. Perhaps you meant 20'?

I would also suggest lengths of PVC pipe to protect the poles and then sticking them up in the rafters etc.

The clear solution is to convince your wife to let you buy a boat and trailer and build storage in the boat.

I already have a boat the problem is the neighbors found out I like to fish and every time I do something for them and refuse money they go out and buy me another rod and reel lol.
Thanks for the ideas, I like the home built ones,I'am cheap by nature and like reusing things I already have, I would love to see pictures when you guys have the time:beer:

Take the money......just kidding.

I have a similar situation....I'm the only one in the local area with tools....and a reasonable capability for utilizing same. As several neighbors like to gather at a local breakfast spot on a regular basis, someone always picks up my bill.

I will try to get a pic for you, but when I bought my garage there was a bunch of clothes pins attached to the wall. took me forever to figure out wtf. It actually works really well and very cheap.

Made this from scrap pvc(about 1 1/2") and some conduit clamps. I made it so I can take it off the side and move it.

That is basically what I made, only I secured mine to the roof of my garage.

I have mine mounted to the ceiling of the garage as well. It works well for most rods. Though, I have noticed that my off shore rods are sagging a little because of their weight. I may have to move them and mount them verticle.

I spent a few hours yesterday in the shop working on this. Not finished yet, as I need to make drawers and do the final assembly.
I found the plans in the Aug 1954 popular Mechanics magazine in google books.
THe plans are for a five rod rack, but I lengthened it to hold ten. The top notches that the rods fit into are going to get a piece of slit rubber or vinyl tube to hold them in place

Thanks again guys for solving a problem I didn't know I had. Actually, the conglomeration of fishing rods is in the corner I have been putting off till later to figure out what to do with. This idea will work perfectly. Now I need to finalize the layout of my lights to miss my rods.

A very timely thread! It surprised me how many people were thinking about fishing pole storage at the same time. I got back from the beach last Thursday and decided my pile of fishing poles in the corner needed some attention. I had a piece of 2" x 2" x 3/16" aluminum angle left over from a project. It was 61" long, so I cut it in half and drilled 1-1/2" holes on 2-1/4" centers starting from the center outward. This gave me a baker's dozen of holes in each piece. I then drilled 4 3/16" holes in each piece to attach it to the bottom of the floor joists in the basement. Here's what the finished product looks like:

I have an old garage-sale gun rack hanging on the wall in my garage, and hang the poles on it.

Timeless design. The racks holding the poles for sale in most stores are this design.

Here are some pictures of a design I found. Now I need to find the time to modify it to my needs and build it. I was thinking about building it out of aluminum?

I love that pulley system. Looks like I need to get some more fishing poles first... obviously 5 isn't near enough to be not using. Maybe I should fish a little more and hang out it the garage a little less... naw, I'll just work on a new holder.

I got mine finished. I stained it a dark wine colour and installed a drop door instead of drawers.

I have it hung from my French cleat system for now. .

I've noticed that fishing rods today are longer than they were in the 50's, ( theres a vintage rod pictured 6th from the left) and I have a 9' ceiling. If i were making another one, I'd make it taller to make the proportions look better.

@topnos's pics. I'm going to build something like this, but I'm going to do it so the whole thing is enclosed that way dust doesnt get all over the poles. 1/8 or 1/4" hardboard or similar.

Garage sale gun racks.
Hang 'em on the wall in the garage, you can store several that way... inexpensive, classic looks (although "cheap" looks) and it gets the job done.

Open rafters or finished ceiling?

In my work room in the garage, I hung 2 aluminum poles (1" dia) from the ceiling 4 foot apart. Length of the aluminum depends on how many poles you have. (Mine are about 30")

Spacers on top are about 2". I left about 10" of aluminum pole sticking past the mount points on one side; This makes it MUCH easier to store fly rods.

I also made a "reel pole" which was simply an old broom handle and some aluminum rings. Slide the rings on the reel foot like an old fashioned cork handle pole with no screw mounts and rack a row of reels alongside the poles.

I made 2 rectangles out of some scrap 1"x2" , I believe they were about 6" high about 36" wide and screwed them to the ceiling in the garage. It has about 15-20 rods in it. Just predrill the screw holes in the 1"x2" as it is easy to split.

Hm.. we have simular way of attaching them, but there is enough room inside a wall to store poles. So we cut drywall out in the garage and installed the mounts then made a door for the outside with a latch, now all the poles are stored inside the wall so nothing can snag or bump into them. Also makes things look cleaner in the garage not having anything sticking off the wall....

My 2 cents

Mickey, I'm sorry we sold that house not to long ago... Not really much to it though basically take any of these pole holders you see on here open up the wall and stick the pole holder inside. Then make a door we used some plywood and painted it, screw the hinges to the wall and toss a hook type latch on it so it stays tightly shut.
