Which do you prefer in your garage and why? Fixed/Attached cabinets/shelves or the modular boltless rivet rack-style shelves that are already prefabricated. I realize both have there place, but would like some advice/suggestions on it. I assume most have both in their garage. But, if you had to do it all over again, which ones do you prefer and why. I know the fixed can't be moved and the the modular ones can be moved around which are great attributes depending on what you want. I'd just like to hear reasoning behind why you went with one or the other or both. Thanks in advance.

I use fixed and rolling. The fixed shelves are for bigger tools and storage for stuff that i need every once and a while like woodworking power tools with cases, paint, tools that you buy for a one time thing. I use a custom built rolling tool chest for my more popular tools that will fit in it like sockets, screwdrivers, wrenches, visegrips and stuff. This way if Im working on a car or something, i can roll it right next to what ever Im working on and have all the tools i need in reach instead of going from one side of the garage to the other.

I personally like a mix of both in my setup, i mostly use fixed storage for items that get limited usage. For things i know i am going to use offend i like to use mobile storage such as wheeled toolboxes or storage carts. When doing little projects around the house i like just grabbing the cart and wheel it to the work location.

Mobile ....hands down.

Everyone moves..everyone.

It may be 10 months or 10 years but mobile storage pays its way.

Only if I have storage weight requirements of many hundreds of pounds do I go fixed shelving...and that is for protection of tipping over upon one's truly.

Now if you live in earthquake country like we do, you secure any mobile or fixed item.

I have rule in my garage. If it's on the floor it has to be on wheels. I have no regrets either. If something is in the way I take a minute & rearrange things.

I have a stockroom that is all floor mounted shelving units. Almost everything else is either on wheels or made to be easily movable with the pallet jack or forklift. If I didn't have those two tools everything would be on wheels.

As much as possible I want everything to roll WHEN I want it to.

SoCal has warm weather year around so we have lots of cover for rats to live in and lots of fruit trees for them to eat well. Hence, I have rats in my garage. I trap, I poison, they get scarce for awhile but they always come back. I need to be able to clean under and behind everything.

Right now I have some crappy permenant shelving in my garage the previous owner put in. I am ripping them out and putting in the modular boltless type of shelving. I was in Costco last week and they have some nice ones on sale that I'm going to go pick up.

I like the fact that the shelves can be adjusted for future needs/wants.

mobile. Everything on casters..that's so every 2 years when you suddenly brainstorm how you can use your limited garage space better you can move stuff. Which surely you end up with the same arrangement you were 2 years ago when you rearranged last =) and then it repeats...

I'm hesitant on shelves and wall cabinets because of that. But any shelfs i build, they gotta be adjustable either the slotted things or dado slots or something else. Inevitably there's the 1 tool down the road that won't fit that you just shove anyplace otherwise. A long time ago i had the heavy duty plastic fixed shelf height ones, and metal ones, eventually ended up ditching all that stuff...too inflexible. I like them adjustable.
