Fixing an IR 2135timax

On Friday night at work my 2135qttimax started losing power and is now at the point where when you put it on a fastener in reverse and pull the trigger it just blows air and won't turn or hammer. I still have a year left on the warranty but I can't really wait for a 2+ week turn around through my indy tool guy I bought it from.

I'm thinking that maybe one of the veins is just stuck open but I haven't torn into it yet. Has anyone had this problem before and been able to fix it with a tear down/ clean up? I am pretty sure my warranty will be void if I crack the gun open but I'm not that worried about it if I can fix it easily this way.

I don't recall seeing any warranty void if seal broken stickers on our 3/4" timax at work when I cleaned/lubed it up but I could be wrong and we've had it for awhile. Honestly if it's not working and you can't afford to lose it for two weeks then you have answered your own question, take it apart - clean it up - lube it up and put it back together. Our 3/4" wouldn't spin off a bolt torqued to ~50 ft/lb's and now after I cleaned it and put it back together it rips like new.

Mine stopped working, the motor would run but no impacting. Was 1 month out of warranty. IR would not do anything for me. Took it apart and found the drive spline on the end of the motor sheared off. Called all around, and looked on the net for repair parts. Nobody would sell me, only wanted it sent in to them, and since I make my living with it that was not going to happen. So I went to Sears bought a brand new one, brought it out to the car and removed the part I needed. Reassembled it and then returned in all in about 5 minutes. Screw IR and Sears!

So good luck finding parts.

And now we know why every manufacturer has moved to China!

Great illustration why buying a MAC/SO/Matco/Cornwell would have been better in the long haul if you need to have a working gun available. All the trucks I deal with have loaners available for when yours is out for service.

I always thought so but I've got a thief for a mac guy, a cornwell guy who shows up every blue moon or so, and a snap on guy with 1 loaner 1/2" impact that's never available when someone in my shop needs it :bounce:

Figured I'd update this thread... this morning I went in early and tore it down and found the vanes were gummed up.. weird because I oil it every other day or so. I pulled them all and cleaned it all up and now it works good as new.

Rarely does a good cleaning not fix a troubled impact... If it's worn out that's a different story.

You can always just buy IR from your mobile tool guy.

Sure does. I was willing to pay for repair parts, and at the time the gun was new there were no service parts available. I was willing to pay for them. I was not willing to have a new impact refurbished by some fly by nite yahoo. I did what I could to keep it honest, too bad IR and sears were not willing to help.

Since then, 7 or 8 years now, I have not bought any IR products. And have no intention to.

No, you were not doing what you could to "keep it honest". In fact, its theft any way you consider it...looks like your moral compass needs a little recalibration! ;)

You keep calling it new, but they come with a 2 year warranty, if it was 1 month out of warranty wouldn't that make it 2 years and 1 mo old:dunno:

It had a 1 yr warranty, so that made it 13 months old. My former impact a IR231 lasted 23 years with only a air vane rebuild kit that was available. I sold that for a IR (forget the number but had a composite housing) and had that sent in 2 times under warranty and the problem was never resolved. Sold that and bought the TI gun. No way was I going to wait weeks for a repair that I could do in minutes. If the parts were available I would have purchased them.

All Ti series impacts are a 2 year warranty

Do you drive around your neighbourhood stealing parts off cars instead of waiting for them to arrive at the dealership too? **** I think you might be onto something...your idea seems way cheaper:wtf:

Digging up an old one because i cant find what i was looking for in the search... its acting up again but cleaning it has not fixed it. It will intermittently stop hammering and just blow air out the exhaust when tightening things.

I know someone along the lines here stated what causes this and it was something in the trigger valve but I can't remember what... does anyone know what I'm talking about? I know for sure it's not in the motor or the anvil mechanism.

Worn end plate in the motor will do this. It only takes a tiny spot of embedded metal from that end plate on the end of that rotor to cause what you are seeing. It can be very hard to see. Clean it off,and no more problem.
Also, broken rotor output shaft will do this too.

Dude stop trying to justify your *******. You pulled a huge **** move, own it. Your actions have consequences, imagine the poor schmuck who ends up with the gun you fuckered up, now he/she's gonna think IR is even shittier maybe even end up in the GJ forums whining about it  way to go chief....

Try coating the hammers with a little grease also put some grease on the hammer case bushing. Hammers in right?
