fixing bent studs

Siding guys pointed out I have some bent studs (2 x 6 x 14'). I took a look and there is one warped inward. The two next to them may be out a bit the other way. He said something about laying a 2 x 12 flat on the wall to pull them all in line - not sure how effective that would be - they will spring a little but pretty stiff.

He also mentioned cutting the stud so it could be straightened and putting another right beside it. Said they had to do several in his building. My worst one in in a gable end so very little load. Anyone else hear of or do something like this? Seems like a reasonable plan.

yes, cutting the stud most of the way thru , straightening it and sistering another up to it is common practice

The plywood sheathing will allow for any attachment needed. Siding is hung loose anyway. Missing a couple screws into the stud is not a big deal.

Not sure what your point is. Just skip the studs that are bent inward when fastening the siding? Or that the sheathing can span the inward studs and doesn't need to be tight to the stud? Some of the low spots are on the sheathing edges so that wouldn't work in this case.

I cut 4 studs about 3/4 through in the back, gable end, wall. Then temporarily spanned studs with a 2 x 4 and pulled them in line with some construction screws. Will add sister studs later. The wall still has some minor waves in it but MUCH better. On shorter walls it would be much less of an issue.
