Fixing the Drawer Pulls on a Tool Box

Hi,

I recently bought a used Kobalt tool box. It's a couple of years old and the only "problem" with it is that the chrome on the drawer pulls is worn off. I have attached a picture of the box so you can see it better. I was going to pull the plastic pull covers off and paint them all black. Has anybody done this before? Any suggestions?

Black electrical tape. Trimmed to fit. I would try it on one drawer first and see how it holds up. Would save you a lot of trouble.

Or black pin-striping/graphics tape trimmed to fit.

I vote rattlecan. Any color you want. If the handles just slide off the end It'll be less tedious than trimming tape. And probably last longer??

Isn't the Kobalt tool box covered by a lifetime warranty? If it is call them to get replacements. You can have plastic parts chromed/re-chromed, don't know what it costs though. I might try stainless steel in a can paint, probably because I already have it, not sure about using it on plastic, could try it on a piece of plastic and see. Anyhow it's a real nice finish.

have you seen that aluminum tape used for HVAC.
cover the plastic trim with that stuff and you are done

Take them off, and rattlecan spray paint them with aluminum colored paint. You can do that easily in an afternoon.

But I'd try and warranty them first if you can.

Go down to Advanced Auto Parts or Auto Zone and get some of that chrome u-channel that they sell for folks to put on the edge of car doors. Otherwise, I'm sure Krylon makes a black or chrome color for you to use.

I just checked on Lowe's and there's nothing about a life time warranty. I'll swing by Lowe's on my way to work tomorrow morning. Somebody in the store might be able to help.

I've used a black epoxy based spray paint from Rustoleum on my drawer pulls(which is available from Lowes. The paint is intended to be used on kitchen appliances such as fridges, but the extra durability is what made me want to use it on my drawer pulls. Mine where originally Aluminum before I painted them.

This was the end result....

The paint is intended to be used on kitchen appliances such as fridges, but the extra durability is what made me want to use it on my drawer pulls. Mine where originally Aluminum before I painted them.

The alumium handles on my Craftsman box fit perfect and were the same lenths. I called Waterloo and they looked up the part numbers from a Craftsman box, I had the lenths I needed and I purchased all new handles.

Not sure if this will work on the Kobalt box, but if you have a Craftsman box you can remove the handle and see if it will fit.

If you can post a picture of the side view of a drawer handle that might help if you don't have access to a Cman box.

Besides, do you really want PLASTIC handles on a tool cabinet?

Good to know! The box is currently at my buddy's shop. I'll take a picture once I go to his shop.

The handles themselves are not plastic. The cover on the handle is plastic.

Here is a pic of the side of the drawer. I slide the handle off the drawer a little to show the mounting detail.
The pic has some flash back in it, if needed I can a better shot later.

That came out gorgeous! Great job, never been on Matco's website. Their custom toolbox app is pretty awesome. Revamping my boxes this summer and that just helped me with what I'm going to go with!
