I have my grandfathers old box. I'm in overall great shape, but it has old school non-ball bearing sliders. Can I new newer style sliders for it?

If I'm not mistaken, you can't swap friction slides (like on your old style box) for ball bearing slides. Clean your slides real well and lube them (do a search, there have been a couple of posts about what to use). Hope this helps.

THAT SO set Is in really GREAT shape!! I'm sure it will mean a lot to you over the years ahead.

Just pull the drawers out - clean the slides and grease them. I used just a thin layer of synthetic wheel bearing grease on mine - they glide like silk now and have less slop than the ball bearing types.

Just keep the grease on and in the slides... open/close the drawers several times - then wipe off any excess. You will only need to do that about once every ten years.

There are YouTube video's that show you how to remove the drawers - if you don't already know how to release the slides.

FWIW,
Carl B.

Also, if you have any that are damaged, there is a very good chance that Snap-On will still have them. I just went through my box a little while back and they still had all the slides for mine (of both styles)

Ok, thanks for the information. I've already removed the drawers and cleaned and greased the rails. They work fine, I was just wondering.

Thanks!

Also, I have cork in my top drawers. Is that a good liner? What should I use and where can I get liner material cheap?

I would also like a rubber pad for that little shelf area. Where can I get that?

You might think this is nuts but I bought a bunch of inexpensive door mats for my drawer liners. They are the kind with the super low pile outdoor carpet bonded to a rubber mat. Black, non-slip, not too thick, sized perfectly for the drawers, and cheap. It would also work for your shelf area with some trimming.

For the rubber matting we have a place in central Florida called Amazon Hose that sells the ribbed matting by the foot which is very close to the SO matting. They are in several larger cities too. You may want to google hose and rubber products for your area.

I'm looking for something rubber so my tools won't slip. I feel like this probably wouldn't work for me, I think I just want simple thin rubber sheets that I can cut to fit. Good idea though!

Great, I'll check them out. I'm in a VERY large city

I started lining my boxes with non slip rubber that is used under rugs. It's available at lowes/HD. I also picked some smaller rolls up at the dollar store that are wide enough to fit the drawers and just need to be cut to length. It comes in different colors but I only buy it when I can find it in black.

Just a small update...Thanks to wornoutoldman for the ribbed pads!! It really cleans up the box and looks great. I don't worry about scratching the top with tools anymore.
