I going to an auction that has an old milk cooler. My thought is to strip the compressor off stand it on end and put shelves in it. What do you think?

I think it's too much of a make work project. It's like buying a van and converting it to a truck. Also, when it
Comes to a flammable a cabinet, why mess around with a crummy thin steel box with who knows what for insulation?

As I get grumpier in life, I've become less motivated to screw around. Spend your time doing the things you really want to do.

I agree with Keelan, if you really want to "make it work" go for it, but don't you have enough to work on already?! :) How's that building coming?

Clipped: i certainly like the look of the old fridge better than those yellow fire cabinets. Check government auctions in your area for lyon or other stout brands for good fairly inexpensive cabinets. I've got a Lyon 4 foot wide cabinet that weighs 550 pounds and betting it would need a nuke to burn anything inside it.

If you just want it to be a cabinet for storage, go for it. If you legitimately want it to be safe for flammables, it doesn't meet the requirements on many levels.

Your project sounds cool. I was on Craig's List every day and found a super clean Justrite fireproof cabinet for $250.
43x18 by -I forget- it's around 73" high.
Decent size. The 36 gallon one.
I did have to order two new shelves and a lock but all in all its a real solid true fire proof for relatively short money.

Agreed ^^^^ and will add my two cents ....I would think that when first responder's show up on a fire call, they would rather see gas cans/explosive components out in the open so they can deal with them quickly, than hidden in a freezer chest that is not labeled or certified for flammables. JMO
