Anybody use Flare Nut Locking Pliers?

Home mechanic however even the flare nut wrenches tend to round brake line fittings/nuts.

Seems like a good tool to have. Recommendations?

So you need one locking pliers for each size flare nut. I'm in the "just get better wrenches" camp.

That may work if the flare nuts haven’t been damaged. Typically I resort to vice grips in that case. These seem to give a much better grip unless the nut is really bad. Agree, start with good flare nut wrenches.

I'm skeptical about them and if they are really any better than a good line wrench. One thing is for certain with them, they are definitely not for close-quarter type work. They are too bulky looking.

If you deal with flare nuts, it's worth it to spend more money on better
wrenches.

Snap-on flare nut wrenches.

This. I spread the jaws on many cheap flare wrenches before I bucked up and got Snap ons. If they work where a cheap wrench wouldn’t, the tool paid for itself in one use. Too bad it took me way more than once to figure that out.

The locking adjustable wrenches look very hokey to me. Also as pointed out a lot of flare nuts aren’t in the most accessible areas.

Those are made in the USA if I recall correctly. I remember them being advertised in Motor Age some time ago. The three pack is currently $128.95 on Amazon.

Certainly good flare nut wrenches are needed in most situations. I think the flare nut locking pliers would be useful in cases where the nut has been damaged . Vice grips will demolish the nut, whereas these may not and save you from having to replace a brake line.

I have used the vise grip style. https://m.grainger.com/mobile/produ...kwcid=AL!2966!3!216788409968!!!g!296274828640! They saved me from having to replace fuel lines when I changed my fuel filter. Everything was rusty and I could feel the nut starting to round with the flare wrench. I ordered a set of the plires and was able to get the filter off. The flare nut was rusted to the line but I was able to spin the filter off. These are definitely not a replacement for a quality set of line wretches, but they do come in handy.

Being OTC I would stunned if it was made in the US as not much is made in the US by OTC since Bosch bought them.

Looks like I was mistaken above.

From one of the amazon reviews: "the box states "Assembled in the USA"

The problem with most stubborn flare nuts is that the nut has rusted to the tube inside of it. Getting the flare nut broken loose is typically not the problem. The problem is that once the nut is loose, the tube is still stuck in the nut and twists anyway. Neither these locking pliers nor better flare nut wrenches solve that problem.

That design would make a great O2 sensor remover! It'd need to handle recessed sensors, too. I'd buy one in a heartbeat, regardless of cost (well, to a point).

I lubricate them good and rock them back and forth until they loosen up. I suspect I don't see the real bad ones living in Southern California. The Scout I am working on came out of Colorado. It isn't all that bad either since they do not salt the roads there.
