What brands would recommend, craftsman ****, they spread, I have SK 13mmx14mm, but the flare nuts are small(10mm and 12mm).

Snap On... honestly IMHO the best on the market in this dept. There are plenty of other options but having used quite a few different brands the S/O stuff seems to come out on top.

I personally use a set of the Mac combo with the open and flare ends and have had no problems. I think that the consenus is Snap On flare wrenches are the best though.

This is one tool you definitely don't want to skimp on. I made the mistake of buying the Harbor Freight set, and they've managed to round off every flare nut I have used them on.

My Williams and Cornwell flare nut wrenches are of great quality, and I highly recommend them.

I've been waiting for a metric set to pop up on Ebay for the past month, if I can't find any soon I'll probably buy a Toptul set.

Looks like I'm a little late. I scored a standard & metric set of SK for 50% off at a store closing sale a few years back. They supplanted a set of Craftsman raised panel flares. I noticed the ones at Sears these days are full polish. Don't know if they're any better than the old ones. Makes no difference to me, got all the flares I'll ever need.

Since I have no brand loyalty at all (tool ****) I have a small selection of random flare nut wrenches.
Snapon s very good no doubt about it. I think I like the one Matco I have a little better though. Not that I ever have trouble with the snaps, just that the Matco is really heavy and overbuilt.
I have some Herbrand metrics that are kind of minimal but never gave me any trouble.

I think my favorite of all are the old, Imperial Brass, wrap around ratchets.
Like someone asked about last week??
If you don't beak the wrench through some sort of abuse, they always work and I think they are cool. The set starts small and goes up to an inch.
Never saw any metrics though.

That's moving pretty fast: From the time you started this thread and inquired about flare nut wrenches -- to the time you made the purchase and reported back -- is 18 minutes. :D

Thats a good score.. that set usually sells for north of $100-120 used on ebay. Use that 50% off while you have it!

I have always heard the Snappy's were the best, does anyone else feel the Matco's may be a little better? This is one tool I defiantly want to top of the line!
Trying to figure out if I can get the school discount ... does Engineering grad school count? :)
I think the fact that you paychecks will have the decimal point moved over a place to the right compared to most of us techs makes up for the lack of a discount! :fawk:

Of course I read this thread AFTER I buy the c-man professional polished flare nut set this weekend. FYI I measured my 1/2" flare wrench and it measured at 0.508. My napa flare was 0.514 and raised panel combo wrench open end was 0.516 (of course its very old and deformed). Old proto open end and protool (cheap) crows foot was 0.510. So the c-man flare wrench is pretty good tolerance. Imn assuming that since the tolerance of my wrench is pretty good, that the only way its going to round is by stretching. So how the heck are you guys stretching the heads on the flare wrench? I could see at the large sizes, but at 5/8" and below, you are dealing with very soft hardware - brass, aluminum etc. I dont see how these wrenches could be rounding unless its over torquing the nut.

Don't worry; that is just one opinion/experience and we do not know the conditions that yielded the described result. General consensus on here is that the SK made C-Man Pro Flares are pretty good. Mine have worked great. I'm sure yours will be just fine too. Plus, you probably picked up the set for around $20.

You got it - $21! its the kinda tool that I dont use frequently enough to (in the past) justify an entire set - let alone SAE AND metric. At the price this past weekend, I wanted to scoop up a quality USA set. You never know how long USA tools at this price point will be around.

Not that brand specifically, but I have used that style before with great success! Work especially well on larger sizes, and give a more accurate torque reading if you need to torque the fitting.
