Flares to extinguish chimney fires?

I see several vendors selling flares to extinguish chimney fires, that are pretty expensive. They are supposed to **** up the oxygen in the flue pipe, and starve the chimney fire. Will the cheaper regular traffic safety flares accomplish the same thing?

Proper inspections and cleanings would likely eliminate the need for such gimmicks.

Yes, cleaning once a year if used often, and don't use softwoods.

No. They're not regular flares. They're extra smokey for what they do.

We use a dry chem extinguisher and not the chimney flares.

They are not flares they are Chimfex fire extinguishers. http://www.chimfex.us/ I have sold them for years. I have customers who have used them and will never again be without them.

When I use to heat with a wood stove at my previous house that I now let my Ranch Manager and his family live in, I had chimney fires all the time, at least 3x a year. I use to let them burn themselves out. I did send one of my kids out to make sure the roof didn't catch on fire if there wasnt snow on the roof. A good chimney fire was the best way to clean the chimney, never once did I call the Fire Dept or use a Chimfex. In fact the house is so far out it'd be gone before they got there.

The problem is not the (wood used), it's a problem with the person burning the fire.
