Flat form spring in a combination square set?

Hi all,

I've been keeping a close eye out for, and have just recently bought, a nice old Moore & Wright combination square set - much like this:

Does anybody know the purpose of the flat form spring accessory in the top left of the photo? Below is a close-up.

It's been puzzling me for a while now!

I'm guessing you push it over the square to stop it falling over when stood with the blade standing up
