A while ago I saw some hose removal picks that had flat instead of pointed ends and now I cant find them. I'm thinking they were sold by Mac or Matco. Anyone have an Idea?

Unfortunately, snap on is the sole source for the flat tip hose picks at the moment. They also released a model with a 2 foot blade recently. Since I hate the instinct handle, I'm hoping someone else releases their versions soon. :wtf:

Luckily for me, there are many other versions of the smaller seal removers available

OK, thanks guys. Buckgnarly's link to the S-o set is what I'm after but the ones I saw definitely weren't Snappies. I may have seen them on eBay as an older set no longer carried by Mac or Matco :dunno:

My auto parts, O'Reilly, store has a set with yellow handles. Made in Taiwan, performance tool or some such brand.

when you find them, please share.

i see people are confusing seal removers with hose picks. :wtf:

the hose picks are bigger/longer and have a much thicker blade.

Yeah, don't know what that's about...

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, I'll keep looking

This is one of those ideas that you have to hand it to Snap-on. It’s obvious when you see it that it is far superior to the pointy design but somehow in 100 years of water cooled IC engines nobody else came up with it. I liked it so much I paid the Snap-on tax.

Is this obvious design patentable? Is there prior art?

That's what I thought when I first saw them "what a great idea". Crazy to think that no-one else makes similar design.

Astro...Are you reading this? :)

Just to give Fedwrench apoplexy: I like the Instinct handle so much I bought the threaded versions to put on my files.

I have the 2 piece Snap On wide tipped radiator hose pick tool set, worth every penny and does not poke holes in radiator hoses.Come in with red handles and the handles can be switched out for a different color handle. One I seen on Koon Trucking's youtube channel on a Snap On Friday video. His dealer switched out the handles to green handles

The long Snap-on radiator tools are popular with diesel mechanics you can reach in and pull a hose off with the hook tool or try to pry it off with the other tool. The large Instinct handles are not that bad as you need some leverage to pull off large hoses.

There might be some specialty tool maker that makes a flat blade rad tool for cars, havent noticed any in the tool catalogs I get from the parts stores though

I think older guys who grew up with the square hard handles (which I think are almost as bad as butyrate handles) grew accustomed to them and now have a condition similar to Stockholm syndrome.

All joking aside it is hard to change after using something for 20 years.

I'm not that big of a fan of the old snap on rectangular handles that would fall apart sitting in your toolbox drawer. Although I do like the MAC version with a little texture in the handle to prevent slip.
To me the instinct handle is just too large and uncomfortable:wtf:
If you guys like it, by all means buy a bunch. I'll pass and search out other options:beer:

Snap on isn't the only brand to screw their handles up. The ideal owned SK slapped pry bar sized handles on Pratt reed screwdriver blades and called it good, Which it isn't :wtf:

I agree. I'm not an "old guy" but I've never liked the old or new S-o handles. To large and clunky IMO.

I was just looking at a set of Prerformance Tool 2 cycle engine carb adjusters, W1185 and the are the same red and black that the OP dislikes. Struck me as a SnapOn wannabe like cheap yellow power tools that are supposed to suggest DeWalt

That all makes sense. I'm 6'6" with hands sized to match. I thought the HK USP had a nice sized grip. Very few people with hand sizes closer to the mean thought the same.

You just have to be careful to point the point away from the hose.

The top one is flat as well. I don't think HF has a version of that :dunno:

Can't find the $10 grinder aisle?:wtf:

BTW, Toptul semi-soft handle is better for grip ergonomically than SO Instinct. I was comparing the locking bit driver with a soft handle ratcheting SO screwdriver.

That’s why the Snap-on one is so superior. It obviates the damage from accidentally twisting your wrist the wrong way. I know you’ll never pay $35 for a hose removal tool.

I’ve never seen a SO ratcheting screwdriver with an Instinct handle, only 1/4 and 3/8 square drives. I wish they’d make one.

M6erfan,

I've been using these Ko-ken ones for like 10 years and I've never punctured a hose. I got these because they don't come to sharp point. The picture is from when they were new:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ccassan/3217114516/in/photolist-RpGYab-QexUHK-FJ9R5i-ENUoMx-Hcgc7s-Gqg3AR-ei5nuZ-RpDGw3-RpDGtN-QTQvZ3-QbJSYj-QTQvWh-QTQvUy-RpGY8N-ReSJHh-ENHkiw-Fzjm1k-FzYBnJ-FChR7P-FChRgg-FFRZ1q-Fj3rkW-FzYBdA-FJ9QFx-Fj3riG-FChQW8-FzYB9s-FFRYKW-Fj3raA-RpDGqb-RtcXma-eib3m9-ei5kyg-eib1Cd-eiaTih-eiaWWo-ei5ffn-ei5bvK-FzYBKs-ENUoV8-5Y4dvs-5XYY2Z-5XYXnB-5Y4eh9-5Udccv-5Ud8Gr-5Uhwso-5UdaCK-5Udaa2-5Uhy4E" title="DSC_3061"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3421/3217114516_baf2ba8593_b.jpg" width="1024" height="681" alt="DSC_3061"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Another reason why I got them was because of the grip handle. At the time I was really impressed with the level of grip this type of handle offered, even when wet with slippery coolant.

I've found them useful for things other than its intended purpose, too.

I haven't seen the Snap-on ones in person, but to me it seems like it would be tricky to manouver the flat-tip blade around a round hose that's tightly bound to a neck. The flat-tip would seem to create more resistance than a conventional conical shaped tip.

It's been a while since this thread started and there's been new flat tip hose picks released since 2018.

Here's a lang set rebadged by many: https://www.langtools.com/sku-854-2-pc-hose-removal-installer-set/

Here's a very economical Lisle set: https://www.jbtools.com/lisle-82130-hose-spoon/

Milwaukee offers this 4 piece hose pick set that includes a flat tipped version:

Duratec Offers a flat tipped hose pick as well as a few other strange named models on Amazon.

I wish Tekton would come out with a selection of hose picks mated to their hard red screwdriver handle
