Flea Market Find!!! Finally!!

After a long search I finally found this old Craftsman Ratcheting Spinner wrench at a flea market. It has not been made in over 40 years. Got it for 25 bucks and it works like new. I have seen them on Ebay going for over $100. No way I will ever let this baby go. Hopefully one day I will be able to find the Craftsman Dog bone wrench (Roto wrench).

hows it work, there had to some reason sears discontinued it, if it works good it just must not have sold well

Great find! I've never seen one of those before. What's a dog-bone wrench look like? Is it a speed wrench that's built like a T handle?

I picked one just like that up for $6 about 15 yrs ago. Saw a 2nd one about 8yrs ago for $30, didn't like the sellers attitude so told him where to put it. Yours is only the 3rd one I've ever seen.

I think sears discontinued it because of manufacturing costs.

It is a nice user tool! Just don't try to get it warrantied! you'd probably never see it again!

While I admit it is a cool tool, what would be it's application? It looks like there would have to be at least eight inches of clear space around it to allow for the "swing". Is there a particular situation that would call for it or is it just an oddly cumbersome variation on the standard speed handle?

Just snap an extension on this and you can tighten head bolts, valve covers etc.. Kinda like a palm wrench, but won't wear out your wrist.

I don't know why they discontinued this tool. More than likely it just didn't make money. It is a very practical tool. If the ratcheting system in it does break, I hope it uses a common Craftsman rebuild kit.

Here is the Dog bone wrench I am now looking for (this is not a craftsman, just an example). Good tool to have in the OLD truck (SAE!). There are old Craftsman ones out there and they go for $50 - $100 on Ebay!

I have one and it can switch between metric and SAE as you turn the thumb screw. Great tool.

Somebody is making that dogbone wrench you show up there new I just saw a set the other day and thought it would be a cool tool to have. Honestly I think it was Sears.

I've seen a couple at swap meets over the last few years...thought about getting them, but could never figure out what I'd use it for! I've got other ratchets that would fill the role better.
The last one I saw, I was actually going to get. It was at a swap meet, and the guy was a tool vendor. He had several 8-foot tables full of tools, and that one was just kind of thrown in with the ratchets. I asked him how much, and he said "That one's not for sale."
WTF?! You're at a swap meet, you sell tools. You have several tables full of tools for sale, this one's thrown on the table with the rest, and it's not for sale?
"Nope. I'm gonna keep that one."
Well, you can keep these, too. (I layed down a bunch of wrenches I picked out, another ratchet and left).

I have been wondering why this tool was discontinued.

At least 3 posters in this thread who have more than adequate tool knowledge have said that they "did not know what this tool was used for".

Perhaps its demise.

I don't have nor have seen one of those ratchets. But I have a dog bone wrench that came in my first craftsman tool set I bought back in the early sixties. I think I paid about $50 for the whole set. I use occasionally, most to remove the oil drain plug. Works good.

Elroy knows two other "professional" wrenchers that have these. They both are in their 50's and won't part with them. They both got them as "hand me downs" from their father. The younger guys have usually never seen them. These tools work just fine in the correct application. Not a lot of torque but they are compact and make some jobs a little quicker. Elroy usually just reaches for the air ratchet but on the road or in the lot, yep they come in handy.

This one's easy. Take your Craftsman open-end adjustable wrench (Cresent) and turn it over! One side will say 6 in. and the other side says 150mm.

I tell them it was made for workin on aircraft LOL
