Picked up a old SK tool set today for $5 at the fleamarket. SK part number #4945. I don't know that much about it, and it is missing a few pieces, so I'll let the pics do the talking. (BTW, I think this is going to be my new go-to 1/4" ratchet.) This is my first 'old' tool purchase. :bounce::bounce: I didnt even consider looking at old tools till I joined here!

Good luck with those sockets. My 1/4 S*K sockets look identical to those and round out much easier than any Craftsman socket that i have ever used. The ratchet was worth the $5 though....

The ratchet alone is worth 5 bucks. I'd put the set at circa the mid 1970's though. I still have some SK sets from my high school days with the same price card. It's a nice set. As I recall the sockets may not have little scalloped areas cut out for the detent ball in the female square drive end though. The 8 point sockets were used for square pipe plug fittings found on everything from oil galley plugs to timing cover dipstick tube plugs.

BTW, it comes with two 8pt sockets. What are 8pt fasteners used on?

The old square head nuts and bolts.

I have several of those (including at least one size Craftsman no longer makes), and didn't think about grabbing them when I went and picked up a old DeWalt GWI radial arm saw (one of the better models). I grabbed my regular, portable set, ONLY to find the stand used square nuts and bolts.:Homer: Doh

I had to sing the I am a dumb... song :lol_hitti

Damn you guys with access to a good flea market.:)
Awsome ratchet that sk will send you a rebuild kit for for nothing. You can even order it online.

I agree. 60's they were 'S-K Wayne, 70's S-K Tools, and in the 80's I think they switched to just S-K.

I still think 1980's because the sets I was selling in the local hardware store at the time looked the same as that one, in particular the little plastic tray and paper info card but then I could be remembering it wrong, it has happened before.

Would there be a date code on the set anywhere to determine the period?

EDIT- On the bottom of the paper, it says "Tool group Dresser Industries"

i don't think S-K ever used a date code.

I have noticed there is some type of letter/number code on most S-K pro series ratchets like the one in the original post. The code is on the drive side of the head,on the indentation for the ends of the retaining clip that holds the drive/paw assembly in. I have never really given these codes a second thought and have no idea what the individual codes mean.

To the O.P.:

Nice find! I really love the S-K round head ratchets. I always look out for these at garage sales and flea markets. I should probably stop buying the standard length 3/8" and 1/4" ones but I just can't pass them by when I see them sell so cheap. The metal box is worth five bucks. Those are harder to find than the ratchet.

When did SK START marking their tools with SK, or did they make some for others?

I have an OLD 1/4" ratchet of Gramps, that I found out was SK by the number on it (same model number as SK, but no SK on it). We think it is from the 20's or 30's.
