I picked up a Snap-On tool box roller cab for $75 today! I thought it looked like a Snap-On and asked the guy what brand it was, "uh... I dunno! KIQ?" It looks just like (or extremely similar if not identical) the one in the pic below; I will post pics later. It doesn't have a Snap-On logo on the front but it has a badge that says "kiq" where you would normally see a Snap-On badge and the sticker on the back says its made in canada (low line Snap-On?) and all the stickers look like Snapon including the Ditzler paint code for touchup. The dead giveaway was when I opened the drawer, saw ball bearing sliders and saw a Snap-On logo (the new style script) on the sliders themselves! SOLD! It is pretty much identical to the picture below but has a model # of KIQ7007A. Needless to say the guy didn't have a clue about what he had! The fact that it didn't have the Snapon script badge in this case was in my favor! Anyone know what the history of these boxes was? The model # isn't coming up anywhere! One clue is it comes up on a list of government products on a Industrial Snapon part # list; I live near the White Sands Missle Range and Holloman Air Force Base; so maybe it was a government/military surplus? It also seems to have reflective tape all over it as well.

The logo On these I think is adhered with an adhesive pad (I used to have a KRA series, im pretty well sure it was glued on). It probably came off or was removed for some reason.

You can probably find a logo cheap on ebay.

Oh yea, amazing score!

Awesome deal!! Definately could be surplus. We had Snap-on roll cabs back when I was in the A.F. Don't remember them having any reflective tape but sounds like something the goverment would come up with.

Well, got the box to the shop and thought I would take some pics of it. The origins, the badges, part # and what this box was used for is something of a mystery!

frontSOtoolbox.jpg

This is the front, it has been hit on the left hand top area of the frame. Note: addition of a odd bracket to "lock" the drawers, the turkeys drilled right into the front of the box! Bummer!

tooboxbadge.jpg

This is the front badge, which is weird; it doesn't have any Snap-On badges but the sliders do have a Snap-On imprint (new style logo) on them! Anyone seen a box with this logo before? The drawers have detents and ball bearing sliders.
toolboxback.jpg

back
toolboxrightside.jpg

Right side, seems they added these brackets to wind things on and some sort of wire with a loop on it that is permanently attached to the bracket.
toolboxside.jpg

Left side
drawersticker.jpg

bottom drawer had this sticker put on the side of it; is this a reminder for a check sheet for aircraft maintenance?
toolboxlable.jpg

This is the production sticker I found on the inside of the box when I pulled out the bottom drawer
tools.jpg

Recognize these tools?
A little tool "surprise" I found when the drawer was removed; note: a odd pair of pliers (no brand markings), a 5” Press for Lead (or Aluminum) and Wire Seals (United Security Seals HC-7 Lead Seal Press) and lastly some cobbled together tool with a hex end on it made by welding a tap, allen key and whatever else to make a custom "tool".
My theory is that this was used in military or aviation maintenance of some sort, all the reflective stickers would make it easier to see, the "list" sticker, and lead seal press tool make me think this, too. The other thing that was odd was the locking rods/linkage/keys were missing and replaced with the locking bar. Could've been the former owner, ordered without locking ability or who knows what! The push "bar" is on the wrong side and the casters were swapped in the wrong direction too (straight and swivel wheels in opposite to normal orientation). No Snap-On badge and all these other things make this a odd bird! Any of you aviation, former military or others guys willing to give your opinions on the history of this thing? Inquiring minds want to know!

Sorry, forgot to shoot a pic of them! Maybe I can add it later! Its definitely Snapon though, the sticker, bar, wheels, and overall look is typical of the brand IMHO.

I think the tools and reflective tape point even more towards military or govt ownership. The pliers are cannon plug pliers for use on twist-lock and threaded electrical connectors. And first aid kits used in aviation typically have lead / wire seals utilized with that seal press. Not sure about that hex tool though.

A quick search of both of the tools. come up with links to aviation tool supply houses; I vote for military aviation use of some sort; it wasn't greasy at all or dirty really. So, maybe for a use other then maintenance but aviation is a cleaner environment then auto repair right? Who knows! Any other comments or insights appreciated!

Unless the dimensions are vastly different, I don't see much of a difference. What's the blue point price? It's not listed in the link.

Is there a huge difference in quality?

I've seen these before at military installations. Not sure if they are made anymore or not. I would guess that the only point of them being branded that way was for special government pricing to avod undercutting their own dealers. Even in industrial I have only really seen SO branded boxes, so I lean towards it really being government only.

I actually found a reference to this model in this thread. Check post number 18. Not very complimentary, but it confirms the heritage of your box.

edit: Google "kiQ series", complete with the quotation marks, and you'll get lots of hits.

That's some good investigating. I don't understand how the slides fail so quickly. What part of it breaks?

UPDATE: called snap on and the parts are all discontinued; looks like it probably had a 1 year warranty and was what they called "field repairable", where your dealer would fix it for you, "in the field". They still sell the sliders and a drawer liner kit but thats it! The snap on people were really friendly and "helpful" as much as they could be; unfortunately, there aren't any parts available for this box. Does anyone think this was made by the "International" Canadian tool box manufacturer, everyone is taking about? I guess I could contact them but I think I am just stuck for now... if I could only find someone else with one.... :)
Well, what do I expect for $75? I guess I should put the lock bar back on or just leave it off and use it as a stand for our pc with the VAGCOM on it! :)

I may "****" but this thing still doesn't lock! I was thinking of using it as my next primary box but since it doesn't lock... I guess we'll just use it for whatever... :)
This thing doesn't lock! Come get it! :)

With those "reels" on the side, I would venture to say that it was, at some point, used on the flight line.......

Even with its faults, thats a very nice buy.

I agree. Reflective tape, canon plug pliers, locking bar.....
If I remember correctly our Snap-ons had a bar similar to the one that yours has. I wouldn't trust the standard locks when it's on an aircraft or on the flightline. Ours was aboard one of these:

The thing on the side could be to wrap your headset cord on.

(we never had roll cabs on the flightline, only hand boxes that I know of)

the pliers with the soft jaws are cannon plug pliers; the other plier is for putting a lead seal on safety wire when you have a critical adjustment that you don't want messed around with (I think, never used that stuff before), and the tap/hex tool??? maybe for Hy-Loks?

oh yeah..... you ****!
