How much are you going to be using them?
Me? Daily, Snap On, Matco, yes worth it but I make my living with them.
I also have a gearwrench set in my car for roadside, used once, didn't break, great for the money, stop by Advance Auto to warranty if it breaks, they keep them there, cheap

You will like them, if you need 12pt versions cheap you can find them at lowes for 9.97 a lot of times. It's only a 6 pc set or so. They have metric and sae.

They're actually 7 sockets, usually for $19.99. They look pretty nice but I don't need them (not a professional mechanic, get by with a flex-extension).

I have Snap On and SK and would buy them again if needed. Have a Mac set, but don't really care for it.
Perhaps I'm reading more into this than you intended, but what do you find untrustworthy about the SK in particular?

Currently using Gearwrench 1/4 and 3/8 metric sets for a living. The 3/8 are a tad bulky, but the 1/4 are nice, with decent angle. The 3/8 bulk doesn't hinder performance though, as I haven't found many instances where I'm cranking on something with a 3/8 drive chrome universal at some stupid angle/access level.
The 1/4 inch are longer than most 1/4 universals, extending maybe 8mm longer. It's useful at times, and rarely slows me down. I plan on getting an SK set, as they're shorter, and I want to buy something.
To me, owning both the longer gearwrench and the shorter SK wouldn't be owning doubles, in my book they're slightly different tools for slightly different jobs.

The Kobalt sockets do look nice, but they skip some sizes and don't have the singles to finish out the set.

maybe i should have worded that differently....
actually i dont think any of them untrustworthy,
the ones i really cannot do without (for those certain times, a couple times a year) are SO.
1/4" dr 10mm shallow and semi deep
1/4" dr 9/16" shallow.
the only one thats ever been broken was the 1/4" dr 9/16"

I have sk, craftsman, and snap on, all mixed together to make 1/4 and 3/8" drive "sets" in both Metric (to 19mm) and SAE to (3/4"). Only thing I've noticed is some are "looser" in the pivot which doesnt really matter to me as I tape them all anyways.
I also have one matco (10mm 12pt 3/8 drive chrome) for Caterpillar Starters that I'm real happy with the quality of.

you can only warranty individual Gearwrench tools that sears sells open stock like basic ratcheting wrenches, not individual sockets.
The problem with Gearwrench 1/4 drive chrome swivel sockets is that there's a lot of play in them. You grab the top half of the socket with your left hand and the bottom half with your right hand, and move the halves in and out.
This play gets worse if the socket is used on an air ratchet or cordless impact.
Used truck brand, SK, Proto, US made craftsman old stock, many choices.
it might be worth it to get 1/4 impact swivel sockets in common size 5.5, 7. 8. 10. 13mm if you use them daily with power tools.

Good suggestion on the impact swivels. before I got my chome set I used my dads set of Snap on impact swivels. Yes you will get some clearance issues occasionally, but it gives you added flexibility, swivel impacts are awesome on a gun, take care of your fingers though!
