Funny you should be posting this, I just was playing with my Dremel shaft-drive today, which has hardly-seen any use.

This thing looks like a beast, capable of running all-day, every day, it appears. It wouldn't take much work w/it to make it pay for itself.

I don't see where it lists the shaft size it has for the cable driver, I suppose it takes 1/4" but it doesn't really show the chuck head.

Nothing wrong with the Dremel or Foredom units, they are great under many circumstances but I want something that is heavy duty. As to the flex shaft, when I get time I will message the seller, have a few questions myself.
Have been looking for a heavy duty flex shaft tool for a while; there is a German unit but the cost is in the stratosphere, like a few thousand.... way beyond my wallet.

Look at the MasterCarver. I use one for woodcarving and have also used it with carbide cutters to quickly remove metal from mild steel to cast iron. It is solid and supported with parts for the long haul.

I have a 1/3 hp Foredom, and an M12 tool, you can't beat either one. No experience with the Dremel flex. If I were to buy another Foredom I would go with the 1/4 hp with reversing.

Both the M12 and Foredom dissolve nuts and bolts with a carbide cutter. I buy the cutter and die grinders from McMaster

You can buy flex shafts all the way up to ten hp. The only caveat I would offer is get a name brand. The one you referenced is likely to be out of business next month. If you ever want parts, too bad. Check McMaster Carr or Grainger.

From the Ebay seller...

"Hi

The shaft and hand piece are Chinese knockoffs of the classic Fordham shaft and handpiece. They are available from a hundred vendors on ebay for around 20 bucks. They are even interchangeable so if you want a 200 dollar fordham handpiece it will fit perfectly. Same with the motors. Very available and good quality. Two shafts come with the unit.. My plan is to create a line of small benchtop machine that will do a number different jobs using the same power source. A kind of DOALL for machinists. Every tool I build is solid and heavy. I want to see my tools handed down for generations. NO cheap plastic junk on anything I make. Its a philisophy. .I have tools that my grandfather used while he worked for Ford in the 20's."

My Dremel flex shaft is very light duty. It's been used a few times and did the job but not easily. The Foredom that I acquired last year is a pleasure to use and has always easily taken care of any job that I tried to use it on. It is many years old but works as well as a new one.

Sounds like a solid guy.

Personally, I've been tempted by the ryobi cordless

Trouble with smaller flex shaft units is I know I could burn them out, even 1/3 hp is not enough for my needs.

Just purchased one, get it around 10/2. Now for accessories. Will review it later.
