If it was mine I would not paint it. I would use something to treat the metal with to prevent additional rust and leave it at that. It looks to cool as it is.

Its a nice old box, I have one just like it. Its from about 38-42. Clean it, clean it again with 0000 steel wool, using a product like Gibbs or any good grade pent. oil. Clean it again with rags to remove the rust, spray it down with a oil again and wipe it down again, you might have to do this a couple of times, but box is worth saving, its very hard to find. Do not clean the decals etc with steel wool, just the metal areas.

That is a nice Snap-on Grey Combination Cabinet that dates between 1939-1940 era. The top chest is a K-5 and the Bottom Roller Bench is a RBK-5. The combination together is referred to as a KBP-500. This set was replaced by the K-55W top chest and the RK-50-W Bottom Roll Cab around 1941. This set was also available in Red and I believe it to be the first of the Red colored tool chests made by Snap-on. Luckily, I have an example of the Red painted set! The placement of the bottom casters really gives away the model of this set of Snap-on toolboxes. I agree with Snapmom, these boxes are fairly Hard to find!

snagga, those are very cool boxes!

It looks like you're missing the 3 narrow drawers from the left-hand side. True?

Mike, I would have guessed this was a KB-506A Combo comprising a K5-A chest and a PRB-6A roller cabinet. No? :headscrat

Resurrecting an old thread.

Dang! That is an awesome box.

I just picked up a ~1920s KRA 25 in original grey color with Stanley Sweetheart hardware and was googling and found this thread.

Wonder what the OP ever did with those? What's he have, 7 posts?

today i picked up a Snap-on 1940s K-55-W Grey Tool Chest at the swap meet. i've been wanting one for awhile and was almost in disbelief when i stumbled upon it and it's contents. the seller threw in some OldSchool Plomb and Blue-Point pieces because he apparently didn't want to hassle with emptying the box.
