Floor and jack stands and welding

Question for you guys. My work garage is finished with w.r. Meadows sealtight cs-309-25 although it does need redone. Whenever putting jack stands under a vehicle, what can I put between the stands and the floor? Piece of wood or something? I am noticing the jacks are starting to dig into the concrete and may start chipping.

Next, when welding, I see the splatter marking my floor up. Do you guys put anything under the spot where you are welding to protect the floor?

Get some plywood squares cut to put under the jackstands 3/4" by 12" square should do the trick. For welding look for concrete board at Home Depot. 1/4" by 4' by 4' and lay it under your work area.

Great infor. Thanks. I didn't know if it was safe to put the plywood under the floor jacks. Thinking they could kick out. Do most of you put something down when welding and using jack stands?

Plywood works well and is very strong. But since you obviously weld, why not weld flat 2"x2"x1/4" feet at the corners of your stands. The only thing I don't like about the plywood is that it's just another "tool" to store and something else to grab when you grab your stands. The flat feet are permanent and should render a big enough base to prevent gouging. As for the welding, I recommend a good welding blanket to lay down. Take it outside shake it out and fold it back up and throw it on the shelf for the next project.

I don't worry about welding on my floor, but if I did I'd use a blanket. I also put my stands right on the epoxy and haven't noticed any problems. I do keep chunks of 2x12 for under the stands to raise things up a little higher. They work better with a piece of 1/2 or 3/4 ply on them because the 2x12 will eventually dry and crack.

Thanks for the info. I went with a couple 12"X12" plywood pieces. The welding blanket is a good idea.

The larger stands spread the pressure out a little better. You may have a soft surface.
