Floor cabinet advice

Hello,

Can the knowledgeable folks in this forum help point me in a direction? I need to find some floor cabinets for my garage, but in all the digging I've done, I haven't been able to find anything that seems to fit the bill. These will be used to store a mix of car tools that don't go into my toolbox (i.e. jackstands, air compressor, specialty tools in plastic cases, etc). This is just for home use, so they won't get that much wear and tear relative to any real commercial setting.

My priorities are:

1. Quality. I'm at a stage in my life where I have begun buying things to last, though cost is still a factor (see below). I think this means medium quality steel cabinets.
2. Depth of ~18". The space I have in my garage will be crowded if I go too much deeper than this.
3. Total width of ~72". In general to me this means two cabinets that are 36" wide.
4. Price. I've been looking in the $400-$800 per cabinet price bracket, not the Lista/Vidmar price bracket. I suppose I could try and reach for the higher cost items, but it feels hard to stomach that for something that's just going to see home use.
5. Customer service.

Like I said, my dilemma is that I can't seem to find anything just right. The mix of size, price, and quality is what seems to be hamstringing me. Here is what I've looked at:

• NewAge Bold... I don't see a size that gets me to ~72" wide. I could go with two 30" cabinets, and use the leftover space to build a shelf of some kind.
• NewAge Pro... Cabinets are all too deep.
• Huksy/Gladiator ready-to-assemble.... All seem very flimsy
• Husky welded... Possible, but haven't been able to find many reviews.
• Gladiator welded... Doesn't get me to 72" wide. If I have to go narrower I'd prefer NewAge Bold for the color options.
• Ulti-mate... Also possible, but slightly deeper than I would like and I think I would prefer steel if I can find the right thing.
• Sandusky/UltraHD/other Amazon brands... Mix of poor quality and lack of reviews.
• Lista/Vidmar... Cost new is high, haven't seen any used in the Austin area

So, does anyone have any suggestions on other places to look? I think I'm inclined to either take the NewAge Bold 30" wide cabinets, or try to think through rearranging the garage to fit NewAge Pro.

durham makes them in different gauges, and each gauge has all different combination width and depths

I have two of the Gladiator bolt together cabinets. (They say Gladiator by Whirlpool, not Husky.) Assembled, these are durable for any garage related stuff I can fit. I'm storing a lot of heavy tools, but things like jack stands or larger power tools would be fine.

Build your own. Garage cabinets are pretty easy, and really don't require many tools to make a nice looking cabinet. I built most of my floor cabinets from Baltic ***** plywood with a Kreg jig and a small table saw. I used 24" full extension sliders, and made drawers up to 36" wide.

It really doesn't take a long time, and you can get exactly what you want.

Have you checked out Saber or Hercke? I'm going through a similar research phase. I'm also talking with a local custom cabinet builer to explore those options.

Thank you all, this is exactly what I was hoping for. I had never heard of Durham, Saber, Herck, etc. Some quick browsing shows those (especially Saber) promising.

Regarding making my own, I thought about it. Unfortunately, my list of projects already includes a half-finished kitchen island and a new master closet. I’m just running out of time.

Regarding the Gladiator quality, I actually had a couple that I returned. The ready-to-assemble stuff looks ok, but they’re only spec’d to 45lbs per shelf and 200lbs for the whole cabinet. With my jack stands on a shelf (right around 45lbs total), I could see it flex a little. With my air compressor on a shelf (65 lbs) I could see it flexing a lot. If I was just putting car wash stuff in they would be fine. As it is I think I need something sturdier.

Look into used Stronghold units. Extreme quality! Units have been going from 400-800 depending on a few factors including outside appearance, location, and sellers knowledge.
I have 4 in my home garage and 10 in my machine shop. They have all been restored and painted and look brand new. Take into consideration these are built from 12g sheet metal (0.105" ~7/64" thickness), compare this to the cheap box store units at (0.030" ~1/32 THK) They take well to industrial environments and occasional angry machinist throwing a boring bar at them. They'll last a lifetime in garage.
