just my 2 cents. if I would put a drain in a shop, I would just run it to a sump. not outside. that way IF something gets in the drain like oil, solvents, and the like you can pump it into a container for disposal. if its just water, put a sump pump in it and pump it outside, that way the EPA does not get after you

Mine are about 9" square and made from some type of plastic or PVC. They tie into the underground piping for my downspouts and runoff into the creek.

Mine go across the entry with removable grates and dump into a sump. I have a big squeegee to push the snow melt into the grates

Good suggestion ! Most cities will make you jump through a lot of hoops to hook up a drain to a municipal sewer or even run it to a drywell. If you plan on doing car/ATV washing make sure you size the sump appropriately (10 gallons ? 20?)

I made a custom stainless steel drain with a oil water separator and sediment trap as well. I hooked it up to the city drain. I agree the process was a real pain the behind. In the long run it will be great.

No matter which kind you go with by an extra or two. So if/when I breaks you can find a replacement. I work at a plumbing counter and hear that problem week after week. You can also look into traffic rated floor drains too. May be a little overkill but they hold up to town motors driving over them.
