floor drain

need opinions on quality floor drain and catch basin. city said i could use reg. trap with sediment catch

Go to your local plumbing supply house. They have the quality stuff. You probably shouldn't go to the local Home Box store. HOWEVER, some home box stores do have old retired licensed plumbers working in them and they can give you good advice.

Plumber or plumbing supply store. Also an extra opinion, one of my biggest screwups in my attached garage is that I put 1 drain for 2 bays. When the snow or rain runs off of the car it runs to the center of the garage instead of under the car, letting me walk through the wet spots to get to the car the next morning. If I ever do another garage it will have a drain under every car.

Just spec out a small to medium sized interceptor and you can plug as many floor drains as you so desire be it trough type, standard round floor drain type with trap, or a steel plate with holes drilled into it covering a boxed concrete box.

We've done all types and i'm kind of leaning towards doing a trough type a few feet inside the OHD opening so any water drains towards it so i can stil have a flat floor with no places for bolts to drop into, or hang up creepers, or anything else that rolls.

I'm not sure what the codes are there. Ask the inspector if he or she wants a trap on the drain. Some will NOT and want the drain to go into a triple basin. Which is more or less a series of ejector pits tied together to catch the sediment and then finally empty into the sewer. The basins MUST have an independent vent terminating through the roof with NOTHING else tying into them. The reason for no trap on the drain is to eliminate any possibility of gasoline or other combustibles in the trap. The independent vent will rid of any fumes in the basins. I hope I explained this good enough for you. If I told you word for word what is in my code book it would take a lawyer to decipher it. Ridiculous isn't it? Safe though. Do not go to the Home Depot and buy 3 ejector pits and tie them together. You would have to go to a supply house and buy them there. NOT CHEAP.

The trouble with drains is getting the floor sloped so that water runs to the drain. Most of the time the water either makes puddles or the floor is sloped so severely that it makes it difficult to work on projects. I prefer to just use a squeegee when water becomes a problem. I also try to keep everything up on shelves or off the floor. Stepping in a puddle is not a problem unless you are walking without shoes in the garage for some reason.

Make sure you check with YOUR inspector. I cannot stress this enough. Codes are different in every state and suburb. I'm giving you my codes. Chicago is where I am a plumber. There are only a few cities where the codes are this strict. It is the safest way in MY opinion. Thanks..... Pipehack

thanks to all for the advice! my build starts whenever the rain subsides. ive got the blessing to put up 2-1000 sq.ft. gambrel style garages. pretty stoked and stressed!
