Floor Grinding Prep

Making plans to do a full flake polyaspartic job to the floor of my pole barn here soon, 2,000 square feet (40x50). The Edco dual disk grinder is the largest floor grinder that any of my local Sunbelts carry.....

I can rent this one with dust extraction equipment for around 1k for a whole week. I'm off for the Summer months, so time constraints are not an issue.
Will this grinder do the job? I figure I can take my time and do it over a few days. Any idea what diamond inserts I would be best to use? The floor is only a year old.
My pole barn has a 200 amp electric service run to it, directly from the electric pole, not coming from our house. The barn has it's own electric line and service. Am I good on using an electric grinder?

2000sf is pushing it for that grinder but, if you've got the time it will get the job done.... eventually.

The only way to accurately pinpoint which diamonds to get you'd need to determine how hard your concrete is by using a Mohs Hardness test kit. Absent this, the local Sunbelt will typically be able to suggest what works best in your locality and will more than likely set you up with the General Purpose 30-40grit Dyma-Sert stones.

You'll need a 30amp circuit for the grinder and make sure the rental yard provides you with an appropriate heavy duty extension cord.

New general purpose Dyma-Serts are supposed to last up to 30,000sf on 3500psi concrete.

i did my 1000sg garage in a day fyi. And that was some old school one with wedges that kept falling out. i thought 1k was a lot so i put in for a week and it was only 400 which is reasonable. Think I'd buy a shopvac with extra filters if they are charging 600 bucks for dust extractor.

Sunbelt will rent you a compatible dust extractor for $180 (maybe less) a day and it's well worth it!

A shop-vac will not provide enough CFM for a twin head Edco. If you insist on going the shop-vac route at least pick up a Dest Deputy or equivalent cyclonic filter, filters alone would be a HUGE PIA for 2000sf of grinding! By the time you're done buying a Dust Deputy and extra filters you'd be darn close to the cost of renting a legit dust extractor and it would make the job so much easier..

I could see a couple hundred but 600 is too much for my cheap azz. Good idea on the cyclone. Maybe with water in the shop vac as well. At least you'd have a tool out of it.

Perhaps the pro's can say. It was not a solid round disc grinder. It had literal wooden wedges that locked the stones in place but they kept popping out so whatever that kind is I would never use it again. at the time i had the time scheduled and perfect weather and couldnt get anything else. Even the 10inch that home depot rents would work fine. Just have to take your time. I only had mine for a 24 hour rental and think it probably was in use for 12 hours. I do remember I was beat.
I used epoxy-coat epoxy. Dark blue color with gloss clear that still is great 5 years later. The only places i had it come up was where i dropped heavy objects and chipped the actual concrete. I see its sold on amazon now but i would recommend you research to make sure its still the same company/product. I bought a 1000sq ft kit plus a 250 for about 1500 if i remember. I did prime the concrete first as well with a ppg product and let that set overnight. I rolled it on heavy so it filled any holes and got more mileage out of the epoxy. Only screw up i did was i got scared the epoxy would set on me before i put the flakes so i did it in sections. As a result you can see variation from section to section. Go buy yourself a professional extendible roller stick so you can reach 12 ft.

Sounds like an older Edco and, yes, the wedge "system" can be a PIA. Do you recall if it was a single or twin head unit? They now use a magnetic arrangement called MagnaTrap. MUCH easier to deal with.

I want to say it had 3 wedges? whatever it was if anyone sees wedges don't rent it. i spent more time finessing it so they did not pop out then just doing the job. lesson learned

I had the same experience when I ground my floor. What a PITA.
