Floor Jack from CL today

I spied an ad on Craigslist this morning for an antique floor jack. From the picture, it looked like a Blackhawk, so I sent the seller a message expressing interest. He called me up a little while later, and I ended up with this...

... for a grand total of $15.

The seller was a nice retired man who was cleaning out his shop. He said it wouldn't lift under load and needed to be rebuilt.

I cleaned it up a bit and tested it. I was able to lift the rear end of my 4Runner, but it did drop slowly an inch or so over 10-15 minutes.

Looks like I have a bunch of reading and research to do here.

I would call back and ask him to be on the "lookout" for the plate that covers the cylinder in front of the light. He might still have it......

Sounds like it won't take much work to have it goin again.

Blackhawk S4, nice find.. Be advised hard parts are tough to find, seal kits are available but pricey. Make sure you verify internal conditions prior to forking out the cash for a kit, its not one of those jack that you throw a handful of orings at it and presto its rebuilt. It takes some general knowledge and blackhawk exclusive tools to properly rebuilt. If your handy and have the knowledge you can make the tools, but remember.. Hard parts are no longer available in NOS form so damaging parts by improperly tightening/loosening can come back to haunt you.

Forgot to add this update - I changed the chocolate milkshake oil out for some fresh hydraulic oil and it doesn't appear to be leaking down anymore.

These old jacks do better with frequent usage. The seals stay soft and pliable. It has probably sat around for a long time without being used much. Good find.

Looking at that old jack makes me think how far we have sunk in terms of quality of what is generally available these days. Compare that jack to a China Torin, or other Asian specials being sold to the general public...

Pray that the metal on the u-joints is not weakened from years of use. When that stuff breaks it's a PITA.
