Floor jack questions

I have an older floor jack that I'm having issues with and thought I'd see if it's worth repairing or tossing it. When I turn the handle clockwise and pump the jack, it goes up no problem at all. When I turn the handle counter clockwise it doesn't lower, however if I keep pumping it a half dozen times in the full up position and release it again, it will go down. If I stop the down movement at any point and release again, the lift will stay in the position it was last in. If I jack it all the way up again and repeat the process I get the same results. Every time I do this, there ends up being air in the system as the rubber bleeder cap hissses every time it goes down. Not sure if that's normal or not. Would there be some kind of o ring on the spring loaded rams that could be worn out and introducing air into the system? The cylinders are not clean looking and have oil residue on them leading me to think that could be part of the problem, not sure. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn’t worry about the Air/plug, it’s normal for there to be some head space movement from the oil leaving and returning to the reservoir. The only scenario I can think of that is causing problems would be that possibly there is some friction on the Main shaft/frame rails that can’t be overcome by the return springs at that particular intermediate position. Can you manually push the lift arm down when it’s released? It definitely sounds like it’s time to investigate further what might be causing the leakage if the jack is worth the effort.

I cannot lower it with my body weight when it gets to that position. If I raise it to the full up position and give it the extra 6-8 pumps then release the handle, it will go down. If I stop part way down and release it right away, it continues to go down. However, if I leave for a few seconds, it stays where it’s at and I have to raise it and do the whole sequence again.

I dunno? It sounds fishy to me, it might require a tear down to eliminate if something is binding internally if you can’t see anything externally that would cause the problem. What kind of Jack are we dealing with here?
