i am searching once again for more floor jacks that lift higher then 21" and are rated for at least 3 ton. i am compiling a little list and we'll see what you guys think.

http://grizzly.amazonwebstore.com/G...froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle

grizzly? i thought they made wood working stuff :lol_hitti

http://www.toolsusa.com/asp/item_detail.asp?T1=PBE 9MS OT1526&trackcode=GoogleBase

this one looks really nice, i might call around locally for this one!

http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/toolcatalog.jsp?cattype=T&cat=2261&select=&page=4

don't know how much it lifts and it might be a relabeled sunnex or ATD

http://www.stylintrucks.com/parts.a...Stands&partfamilyid=6016&x=49273&scid=FROOGLE

torin jack. not too keen on the quality of appearance. looks very cheap!

http://usatoolsinc.com/35tonheavydutyservicejackmtn5503.aspx

don't know who makes it but doesn't look too bad either

this is a short list, i can't decide yet. i was able to talk down the local napa store to 20% off if i buy at least $300 worth of stuff. i like that otc stinger jack but i am not sure of the availibility.
i want to hear your input. i need one for spring time and its right around the corner.

Adam,

Check out Craig's list. I recently bought an old Walker for $50.00.

It does not meet your criteria; 2 ton & 20" lift. However, Hiball sold me the rebuild kit for $75.00.

I bought that, after reading both Elroy's and Hiball's restoration threads.

Arcan XL35 goes up to 21 3/8". $125 from Northern Tool. Occasionally they send out free shipping offers. Otherwise shipping is about $70.

SOB... LOL your kit is enroute to Ca btw...

DAVE... Dave.. dave... If your intentions are to buy a OTC or a Matco or any of them other Painted up, Look at my fancy sticker Models. You might as well go to Harbor Freight and buy one. Ive documented with links 100X's on this site showing that they are the same in the end. I promise you that you will find the same identical jack there and if they dont have it, Sears will. Theres no special seals, Special Hydraulic fluid etc... etc...etc.. Im not saying you wont get better warranty from Matco and other truck brands, But i would definitely look into it. If you doubt my word, Find a Jack that a "Major" Company sells at a premium and i will show you its priced down model. You can also search back thru some of my posts and you will find some comparisons.

no jacks here. either it is extreme overkill like a 5 or 10 ton one or too tiny

Where are you located?

Thats the problem right there, You cant judge a Floor jack by the Color or fit and finish. Who cares what color it is? It boils down to the Hydraulic system and what type of seals it uses. Which Snap on Jack did you own? YA700 was the only 2.5 ton i knew of prior to the junk they pedal now and it was Walker design and a Bad MOfo..

yep it was a old ya700 from the early 90's. i thought it was really nice but thats just me. didn't feel or look cheap.

what do you think of that otc stinger with the swivel joint adjustment and single pump design? maybe its a dual i don't know.

your not really helping me as far as pointing me in a direction where to go for one

I would stay away from that swivel point adjustment, Its just more things to go wrong. I also would stay away from the Single pump "Quick Lift" Jacks, They are prone to fail and really a mickey mouse setup. I always push the Big names, Walker, Lincoln, HW, Weaver, Milwaukee etc in either New or Quality USED condition. If your gonna buy a New Import, Dont be dissapointed... Buy from a reputable company that has a good Exchange policy and if you do have problems check into the "Import Jack Tutorial". I just cant stand to see people duped into giving $180 bucks for a shiny import, when you could get into a quality HW unit for $60-70 bucks more NEW.

Those jacks arent really too bad but they are hit or miss, Check TaddWholesale on Ebay sometime. Im fairly sure he sells about 100 import jacks a day via ebay. If i remember correctly those jacks actually use a Small ucup on the pump, Problem is its very thin...

I've had mine for over a year now and I haven't had a single bit of trouble. I still use jack stands though!

I have had the Stinger (imported) 3.5t jack for a while. For me, it's been a really good jack and works well. It doesn't have the best minumum clearance though.

did i mention this is for home use? i haven't used a jack since april 09 so i rarely use them. it just so happens i have a few projects that require some lifting coming up on the agenda.

that 5 ton hf jack is pretty nice but i would feel guilty getting it knowing i should be saving my money for schooling later in life. i have been known to do a little wrenching on the side for friends so i don't make alot of money doing that.

that 5 ton probably won't fit underneith my probe when i gotta rotate tires this spring either.

i am gonna call napa and carquest and see if they sell that stinger or could at least order one

I have a 2.5 ton that goes up to 23" its a Omega 25025 2.5 Ton MagicLift Hydraulic Service Jack. I love it, I have been using it for 3 or 4 years and It has never given me a problem. It was expensive but my little jack was popping and groaning and my wife kinda freaked. She told me to get a good one no matter the price. This one was in stock at the parts store and it was on sale so I gave it a shot.

Omega is made by shinn Fu and they produce most of the jacks that are sold in the big box stores. I've sold many of those magic lift omegas and worked on at least 50 and they all end up with the same problem eventually... The quick lift internal oring wears and where you used to get a full lift on one pump or two now it lifts and then falls down a bit. It still works on the low side but it takes more pumps. Omega makes a good overall jack but there price point is getting near a us quality model.

fordbroncodave,

Didn't you start a thread last month on this very subject of you looking for a floor jack?

I believe there have been some good recommendations given. It all boils down to what you believe in.

If you buy a new Asian import unit then it's going to be a **** shoot. If you want to go cheap, that's fine just don't go cheap on quality. It's also a matter of safety, if you bought a new expensive motorcycle would you go cheap and buy a 10 dollar helmet? I just doesn't make sense. Remember your head might also be under the load that your new cheap-*** jack is supporting when you go to put jack stands in place.

Want to save some money and get quality? Look for a good used 20 year old plus American manufactured jack that meets your criteria, put a new seal kit in it and you'll be good to go for a very long time.

Hein Werner is USA made. There should be a dealer near you. The one near us heavially discounts them because of all the Chinese throwaways. One of my favorite places if you are in So Cal is JACK-X-CHANGE in Anaheim. They have a 3-ton that goes to 21" for $129for example but it is a Neiko Pro. 3-ton serviceable Hein-Werner that goes to 23" is $389. They service what they sell. My floor jack is 31 years old and we bought it there.

I only paid 125$ for mine, I hit it at just the right time. Advanced auto was dropping the line so I dont think I did to bad. Can you get a rebuild kit for them or just dont one pump it to the top?

Oh, and fordbroncodave, I use it a lot on a couple of 79 broncos. One of them keeps getting smaller and the other one is getting bigger. I hope to have the good one on the road in a couple of weeks and the parts one fully stripped and scrapped soon. When the tub was sitting next to the frame I thought I would never get her back on the road.

I have the red and white HF 5ton long frame which has been great (special order from the store). IIRC they make a 3 ton version as well, it's actually a clone of the old green and white Craftsmans from the 70's and is much nicer that the orange HF jacks.

There may be some similarities between the Sears jacks from the 70's and the Harbor Freight 3 ton models but its skin deep and even then your pushing it. Do you have some pictures of this 3 ton Craftsman clone? I know Mickey has one of these 3 ton Sears Japan jacks lieing around. You have to remember that the Chinese are very quick to copy a Tool and that doesnt necessarily make it a quality piece, I get a couple calls a week looking for rebuild kit for those old Jap Sears units and all have the same story, 20+ years and no problems till yesterday.

Well I won't argue that the chinese are quick to copy something sans the quality, but these jacks are the best ones I've seen HF put out. As far as how close the comparison is, my 5 ton vs my father's 3 ton Craftsman, they are the same down to the location of the bolt holes in the frame. As far as the hydro units go I'd have to pop the covers and look to compare. The link below is the 5 ton verison, couldn't find a picture of the 3 ton so it maybe out of production.

They actually stole the Complete fram idea from Ausco jack company, Below is a pic of a 10 Ton Ausco that i recently sold. The picture isnt the best angle but you can see near the rear how the cage is set up, That it is identical to those Harbor Freight models all the way down to the Release. Where the difference comes in is in the hydraulic unit. That Ausco uses a Hein Werner Unit and has 2 pumps. I actually have a Central Hydraulic something 10 ton jack in my shop and i couldnt believe how similar the features are with the Ausco jacks from the past. I suspect they can get away with patent infringment because the the Hydraulic unit is different.

Patents mean nothing in China. It's called a US patent for a reason.

That's interesting, I never knew anyone made that style jack other than HF and the old Craftsman. Not really suprised that Hydraulic unit is different, you don't get them to be that cheap without changing something and that's the expensive part. The patents really don't seem to be enforced when it comes to goods from the far east, even when they're sold here :(

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
It's not China that is doing the patent infringement, it is the companies in China. In the late 90's I was the VP/GM for a tooling and automation company and we sold stamping tools and dedicated presses and other products to major companies like Motorola, Qualcom, IBM, Apple, Ford, GM and a few other large corporations. We sold to many of their manufacturing facilities throughout the world, but we noticed that in China we would only sell one machine and a few dies. They would have a quote multiple quantities for each to get lower pricing and then issue the PO listing the higher quantity and only relese 1 to be made intiially. Then after shipping and then installing these units in their facilities shortly there after they would cancel or never order the balance. We would procede to invoice them adjusted prices based on quantity of 1, they would refuse to pay, yet Motorola had an issue with their machine and requested for us to send a tech to China. When he arrived he found 4 identical machines, except 3 of them didn't have our name plates on them. Our tool design, punch design and machine designs have multiple international and US patents, yet the cost of defending/enforcing those patents in China was a loosing battle. The cost of traveling to China and paying for Chinese lawyers is too high when compared to the profit percentage you make on your product. The other business impact was the negative impact on our reputation from the other US based business units of those customer, which you would think they would understand that our patents should be enforced, but we knew that they knew their company was pulling these tricks.
