A relative is building a 4,500 Sq foot pole barn (wood frame with metal siding and roof).

It will not have concrete. Will be used for storing vehicle and equipment for landscaping business. Will probably do some light maintenance in it.

What would you recommend using for rock etc for the floor?

What type of rock would probably depend what's available in your locality. Around here, there are several limestone quarrys so that's what is generally used.

As far as no concrete and doing light maintenance, your relative might find that pouring a concrete pad in one corner where that work is being done quite useful. Setting jackstands on a smooth concrete surface is alot safer than in gravel or trying to roll around anything that has wheels will be alot easier also.

for the storage part of the floor, just cheap gravel will do...it will drop in to the soil over time anyway.

If you want a spot to do maintenance, you might want some compacted crushed stone, limestone and cinders will do OK, or you can just round up some cardboard or packing blankets like I used to do.

Best of luck

Excavate topsoil and organic material down to firm subsoil material.

Install landscape fabric.

Place angular limestone with fines mix and compact in 4" lifts to above surrounding grade.
do not use any round material. It will not compact.

Should provide a concrete like surface.

For the base you need ca-7 and then for a top dress you can use ca-6. The ca-6 is a 3/4 stone only. The ca-7 is a fine mix with stone.

If you want to get a really good base put driveway fabric down first then 2" stone for a solid base then everything else I said afterwards. I would also recommend that you dig out a good 4" of dirt if you do the big stone.
