You all might have seen this Image floating around the interwebs:

And thought I should build something like that for my shop. I also followed along with Ryan's Musings for the best tool storage to use in his Hawaii shop.

I wanted to move all of my drill bits into the drill press cart to centralize where they live. Like most of you I have twist drills, Brad point drills, Spade bits, Centering drills, hole saws (lots), Forstener bits, rota-broaches, masonry drills, diamond bits, tile bits, micro and hand drill bits and probably more hiding in various tool boxes. My thought was to have some sort of portability (Like Ryan's use of "Milwaukee Packout" for tool storage), but I just hung this photo in my shop for a few years until recently. I was donating some stuff to "Habitat for Humanity" (did you know they now take electronic waste now in Cincinnati?) and I found a three drawer kitchen base cabinet with a plywood case and smooth heavy slides 24" wide for $40 and I thought, You know?...

So, here it is modified to slide over the drill press base (Delta). I added (4) four nylon garage door rollers so I could easily move it out of the way should I need to drill something very long. (hasn't happened in 26 years). I had some rubber mount feet from our old washing machine that could be used under the toe kick to keep it from rolling out when pulling the drawers open.

I bought (1) One Milwaukee Packout screw sorter box with clear lid, thinking I may adapt three of these to the existing drawers like Ryan's setup. And I have cut out some cardboard to fit up against the wall and drill press post as a pattern. This shelf/table is to catch the chips from drilling so I don't have a big mess behind the mobile base that needs constant cleaning.

As I said, it's a work in progress and I have to move the big Chrysler out of the way to organize all of those drill bit cases and to finish the "Chip shelf". I haven't had any recent drilling projects to motivate me to complete it. So far I have picked up the drill press vise off of the floor and put it into the top drawer. Whew! I need to take a break!

This is my "KISS" version. The box sits on the DP base plate and can be lifted off as needed.

Great looking cabinet and shop.
You have to be talking about Tarmy's shop and not mine!

And Tarmy, I see you are sharing your shop with the water heater right behind the drill press. You probably move it away from there when you have some drilling to be done. Most of my shop equipment, table saw, miter saw, welder are all on wheels and get moved into the driveway whenever I am building something. The drill press stays where it is tucked into the corner. I used to keep my short lumber cutoff pieces in a square bucket behind the drill press. The Workmate used to be tucked in there too. That is why this is sort of a trial basis/idea. The Packout is meant to be my "to go" box for drills when I work on site somewhere if that's possible.

If you looked at Ryan's Hawaii tool setup with multiple Packout boxes on drawer guided shelves, that is what I may do. The existing cabinet drawers are a little too small to fit the Packout so I would have to cut out either the front or back of the drawer for the Packout to fit in. I just need to get off my duff, pull out all the drills in their indexes/containers and see if I can fit them all into (3) three drawers. One drawer being a Packout on sliding shelf.

The cardboard made a good pattern and I plan to transfer it to either 1/8 plywood or the sheetmetal I salvaged from the old washing machine then make a chip catching shelf covering the mobile cart going all the way to the wall in the corner.

Any photos of drill bits organizing in a similar setup?

Sometimes waiting a little while brings inspiration. While reading the responses to this thread I noticed two reasonably sized spaces in the cabinet. Also while looking for drill bit storage I came across several versions featuring a shallow drawer with dividers to hold loose drill bits. I tried one of the cookie sheets kept in the gahraj for sorting, drip catching and do-dad rebuilding and it fit nicely in the gaps between the existing drawers.

So now it has Five Drawers!

I had this weird wooden profile rescued from my sons burn pile to use as drawer guides.

More progress on the drill cabinet. I added a top to the cabinet and "chip catcher" to the adjoining wall. I had enough time to get out all the drill bits and put them away. I still plan to do some more and am enjoying the space in the regular tool box.

The old Lincoln got a rebuild that is documented on the JG. The new format makes it hard to locate, but, basically I wanted to test my candy red over pearl paintjob prior to putting it on the car. It’s shiny on the welder, but the car got a “ trendy for the time” flat candy-pearl version. I’ve had that welder since 14 yrs old. 49 years!
